Thanks Jokin for prompting me to check the modem again. It appears that I goofed when I set the modem up in the first place. It was already set to 729. When I changed it back to 711 all is OK. Next time I will check my facts before I go to print.

I am using a Netcomm BG834GV v2 modem on ADSL1. Calls to and from landlines are no problem. Calls to and from mobiles complete OK, but voice transmission is rendered unintelligible by noise at the mobile handset end and dead silence at the VoIP handset end. I am using G711 A-law encoding.
