Gentoo mirror limits number of connections

I've got my Gentoo system configured to prefer mirror.exetel.com.au, but find that the mirror appears to limit the connection rate, which makes it only half-useful. What I am seeing is that the first 8-10 files download OK: >>> Fetching (3 of 17) sys-apps/coreutils-8.12 >>> Downloading 'http://mirro...

Re: ADSL Plans/$10 - $25 Per Month Discounts

I would not mind bundling, but there are a couple of things that may complicate things: No Optus ADSL2+ available in my Exchange. (NBRI) I currently have Telstra Homeline Budget, which I believe has restrictions on STD/IDD pre-selection. My Exetel mobile is on a $0 plan with a typical monthly spend ...

Re: Change phone provider while on BYOline ADSL2 plan

I went from iiNet to Telstra (iiNet would not let me keep a phone line without an associated Internet service) and I made sure that I confirmed with Telstra that my line would not be moved from the existing port on a Powertel DSLAM. My local exchange doesn't have an Optus DSLAM since our street has ...

Re: Change phone provider while on BYOline ADSL2 plan

I am on a BYO plan and have switched phone line providers a few months ago. It was a seamless process with no outages. I made sure that I confirmed with the new phone line provider that the change was only for billing and that it would not affect my existing ADSL2+ connection.

Re: Off-Peak time reduction-This is a joke

In the interest of being constructive, I offer another suggestion. First, I must say I'm not a big fan of "unlimited" plans or other unrealistic promises. Chances are that unlimited plans won't attract the customers that Exetel wants/can afford. Furthermore, I think the "unlimited" moniker sets unre...

Plan changes and switch fees.

I'll limit my comments to the "$10 Switch Fee", which I think is very unreasonable. Through various blog entries and other comments made by John Linton and other Exetel staff, we can assume the following: Exetel profit target is about $1 per month per customer. Exetel systems are highly automated to...

Re: ADSL2 Unlimited Plans (For Exetel Users Only)

We so need to clamp down on copyright infringement in Australia. It's a bit presumptuous to assume that the requirement to transfer large amounts of data can be somehow automatically assumed to imply copyright infringement. The vast majority of consumers these days would have high definition TVs an...

Re: ADSL2 Unlimited Plans (For Exetel Users Only)

As always the devil will be in the details. My current usage patterns are restricted because an peak/off-peak scheme with limits in each category would make things complicated and expensive for me if I was really going to use my connection as I want to. A truly unlimited plan for me would be 24x7 ac...

Re: Online TV

It is still on the to do list but we are having no luck in finding channels that would be of any interest to our user base demographic. We will not stop looking. The easiest content to license for this purpose is adult entertainment. You can pretty much bet that there would be interest from both co...

Re: Content Filtering Trial

I'm sure that Exetel technical staff probably considered this but here are some scalability questions that probably need to be asked: Scalability at the core routers : A routing table with ~200 additional host entries is going to behave very differently to a routing table that needs to accommodate e...

Re: Possible Change To Off Peak Period

changing the off peak time later and in "exchange" get more quota. Why do people feel like they "should" be rewarded for chosing options which change the periods that their ISP deems "off-peak"? My proposal was structured such that the part of not changing the default from 12-12 is balanced by the ...

Re: Possible Change To Off Peak Period

I'm mostly ambivalent about the change. I work from home and depending on whether I deal with clients in Europe, North America, Asia or Australia, I end up using my connection at different times. I try to squeeze my data hungry work related tasks to the current Exetel off-peak time slot. This work c...

Re: Mobile Offerings From Exetel

I'd like to see an option with no ongoing fixed cost component, only pay-as-you-use costs. I use a mobile phone on a very irregular basis. It may not get any use for 7 months, then be used for 3 or 4 phone calls in one weekend. On occasion (about once every 14 months), I go through a period of heavy...

Re: Possible New ADSL2 Plans For New Financial Year

Then the customer only has to stop downloading for a while so that the overall rate goes down and a surplus builds up and then it's back to maximum rate for a bit again. The longer the customer waits, the bigger the excess of "allowable" downloads becomes and the more can be downloaded at top speed...
