Re: 2am lag ruined my night

This is an oversimplification. The fact is that I, and many others, can get good off-peak speeds. I suspect that for some people such as yourself, there might be bottlenecking occurring at the exchange I guess all we can hope for is for some heavy downloaders to join your exchange so you can unders...

Re: Off-peak / Unlimited plans considerations

No idea. But I'd start with just implementing Statewide limits during known times of congestion. If some people did complain about being able to only download from 50 sources at once instead of 2000 sources, then maybe think about adding something to the user control panel which allows users to hit ...

Re: Off-peak / Unlimited plans considerations

it wont work, just fix up the way the system handles congestion in an exchange so heavy users wont affect everyone else. Limit max threads while exchange is congested AND Limit max total speed while exchange is congested. That is a fair way to give everyone on an exchange a fair share of the bandwid...

Re: Sloooooow Download Speeds - Newcastle

Maybe you were moved from Telstra to Optus hardware, pure luck, or you just didn't notice slowness until now? Mine is usually fast in early morning but slow near 10-12 in the morning.

Exetel speed test is a bit unreliable, some people get 50 meg per second.

Re: Practical alternatives for managing off-peak and congestion

These are my ideas. #1: Limit the amount of open connections (download threads) per user during Peak time, or close connections faster. It isn't fair that anyone can clog up the system by opening a lot of connections during Peak time, regular users and gamers generally wont be affected by this but t...

Re: Sloooooow Download Speeds - Newcastle

I'm also in Mayfield, there are too many of us on the exhange and it gets clogged up. Nothing we can do about it except join in or drop out. It really sucks that we can't stream video (above say 100kb/sec) but we CAN just add more downloads (5 files at say 50kb/sec each) to help slow everyone else d...

Re: Latency increase across the board

Ping today, still 54ms. My usual is 20ms
Maybe the new POP stuff is doing it, or maybe the upcoming core router replacement on 18/9/09 is meant to fix it (just got an Exetel email )

Re: Midnight crisis

the 1st of the month is always slow too.
11:30am 80kb/sec, did three test with reboot and modem restart between each, 80kb/sec was my best speed.
12:30pm was 200kb/sec (my max is 800kb/sec)
MAYFIELD exchange. (this is important, always mention it when you report your speeds).

Re: Midnight crisis

I don't know if it is a known congestion area, it might just seem that way because I talk about it all over the place. PS: Linux usetbase is very low, as is Opera use.

Re: Midnight crisis

Don't blame Exetel, blame the leeches that come out of the wood work. No network can possibly cater for this type of saturation usage, the cost to contruct a network that can maintain 100% usage at one time would be finacially impossible. and could this not be planned for? It is (has) been dealt wi...

Re: Midnight crisis

Still doesn't change the way the load balancing works. if my area is under heavy load I can just start more downloads to get full speed and slow the non-leeching users down even more.

Re: Midnight crisis

I'm not keen on switching, I'd rather some kind of change to the way bandwidth is shared by users in a Region/Exchange. I don't think it is fair that the high speed customers can max out their connection by using multiple downloads and then anyone who wants to download ONE file will suffer because t...
