Thanks for the info Arshad. I would be very happy if I can get these things working in a basic sort of way to tide me through the next few months without need for fixed line.
(Mind you, if I had the spare cash I would just do fixed line anyway... ) :)

Thanks to the engineer who I have tested this all with who has done his absolute best for me without doubt & is trying to get a fix via Optus wholesale on this issue. Seems fixed here now also with the exception of I find I seem to be having to dial an interstate phone number in Melbourne a couple of times to get through. (This could be the 3rd party end which is using diversions to route to different departments within their organisation though.)

It makes no difference whether I use 8 or 10 digits. Adding the area state code [02] to the start makes no difference.
