I've resurrected an older Billion 5100 to put in service here now for the time being.

Definitely PPPoE doesn't work, only PPPoA.

Why can't PPPoE be made available to use?

I would much prefer to put in place an ADSL2+ capable modem in bridge mode with PPPoE connection.

I am talking about full bridge mode, not half-bridge mode. The only option in this case is PPPoE.

Bridge Mode Problems

Hi, I am finding that using bridge mode with modems is failing and I was wondering if there has been any changes that could stop bridge mode connections from working as they have in the past. Any attempts to login via PPPoE through a modem in bridge mode results in zero communication back to the PPP...
