SMTP server issues

Post by Frigid » Tue Mar 25, 2008 3:41 pm

Tried this afternoon to send some mail, but SMTP does not seem to be working:

- Thunderbird error message: 'SMTP server smtp.nsw.exemail.com.au failed. The server may be unavailable or refusing SMTP messages. etc'

- Switched off Avast! SMTP scanner, tried again, failed.

- Switched off Comodo Firewall, tried again, failed.

Internet browsing/download all seem to be ok.

Can someone suggest a fix?

Yea you could try smtp.nsw.exemail.com.au instead of extel.com.au.

"Sending of message failed.

The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp.nsw.exemail.com.au failed. The server may be unavailable or refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP setting is correct and try again, or else contact your network administrator."

[OK button]

No error codes or the like.

I haven't changed any of my SMTP settings. Can receive mail through POP3.

Can you please let us know if you are connecting with an Exetel ADSL connection?

Also can you please see if you have selected SSL for outgoing mail.

Can you please try the items listed here - http://forum.exetel.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=26068

Also if that does not work please try to lower the MTU to 1452 and see if that makes a difference.

Using windows XP ?

What happens when you do the below:
Click Start.
Click Run..
Type cmd
Press enter

in the black window, type 'telnet smtp.nsw.exemail.com.au 25', press enter.

What response do you get?

I get stuck at the sending email to self stage:

Firefox waiting for webmail.exetel.com.au... Times out with the following message:
"The connection was reset
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
- The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
- If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
- If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."

Logging into webmail works fine. Browsing the different folders in webmail seems fine. Other browsing (SMH, Facebook) seems ok.

Tried the telnet command, get the following:
"220 smtp.po.exemail.com.au ESMTP - Here there be dragons!
421 smtp.po.exemail.com.au: SMTP command timeout - closing connection"

I can report the same problem here.... "Sending of message failed....
The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp.nsw.exemail.com.au failed....."

The problem has only become apparent to us in the last 20 minutes but may have been there for longer.

On ADSL2, Mona Vale exchange. The same is happening when sending email from any of 3 PCs on our network. All 3 using Thunderbird on WindowsXP. No previous problems.

Thanks,
Matt.

Edit: There be dragons there for me also

If you are able to connect using Telnet, as many have been, then the issue is either when 'sending' the actual email (so the commands after connection taking a long time), or they are configuration issues on the email client, or any related plugins (such as virus scanners).

The fact you are getting the dragons message suggests you are connecting successfully to the server.

I have confirmed that I can send plain text emails, but not html. Hope this is of some help...
(sending non-exemail emails from Thunderbird attempting to use exetel's smtp server)
