IPod Touch outgoing email failure to connect

Post by John W Spence » Thu Jan 29, 2009 8:40 am

I've recently synced my new IPod Touch to my home computer. I used the Exetel download to set up Outlook on my PC and synced my Ipod Touch to those settings. I can receive emails perfectly well on the IPod but when I try to send mail I receive a message that the IPod cannot connect with the smtp Exetel server. On my PC outgoing mail works OK with Exetel's settings. We have two other computers that send mail wirelessly. And I can send mail through webmail on the Ipod. Has anyone got an explaination and a solution for my problem?

Hi John,

Can you reproduce the settings that you have in your iPod for the outgoing (SMTP) server?

Hi John, when you sync to do the setup it won't set the account up properly, suggest deleting the account and setting it up manually as you normally would an email account and you should be fine, I've done the Touch and the iPhone previously without issue but the accounts must be setup manually to get it working

let us know how you get on

Thank you for the feedback so far. I have tried the suggestion of adding the Mail Account details manually. I have struck a snag though. I deleted the account details that ITunes synced to my IPod Touch and created a new account adding the exact same information:

New Account
IMAP/POP (I selected POP)

Name: johnspence@exemail.com.au
Address: johnspence@exemail.com.au
Description: johnspence@exemail.com.au

Incoming Mail Server:
Host Name: pop3.nsw.exemail.com.au
User Name: johnspence@exemail.com.au
Password: *****

Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.nsw.exemail.com.au
User Name: johnspence@exemail.com.au
Password: *****

when I clicked save, it said it couldn't connect using SSL (an IPod default I believe) and did I wish to use another method. I clicked Yes. I then received an error message saying <POP verification failed. The POP server "pop3.nsw.exemail.com.au" is not responding>.

What am I doing wrong. Thanks in great anticipation of a miracle response.

just confirm for me before we go any further, are you accessing wireless using your Exetel user account while you are doing this setup?

If you are not behind an Exetel connection, the SMTP will deny access to prevent spam (a measure used by many ISPs which blocks all IPs outside of the ISPs range to their SMTP).

You can sign up for a Gmail account and use their SMTP (which will work practically everywhere), although you do need to use authentication with some other settings to make it work.

Thanks to all those who have offered advice so far. I have tried to set up the email account details manually, whilst connected to the net (with Exetel open as well), but I still can't send mail. I'm not sure what JamesR meant by "behind an Exetel connection". I'm guessing that there is no solution to my problem - it seems that Exetel has a security protocol that prevents me sending mail to therir server - though why this problem does not exist for laptops I don't know. I've run out of ideas and Forum members suggestions.

by behind an Exetel connection he means are you using the service via an Exetel internet connection, you can receive mail from anywhere but you can only send mail from an Exetel email address if you are connected to an Exetel internet connection, for example if you were connected via a Bigpond internet connection you could receive mail but you could not send mail, if you were trying to do this from work (which I gather you are posting from by your IP address), you could collect mail but you could not send mail with your Exetel email address

When using my IPOD Touch I am connected to the net via my Exetel ISP connection. But I am not trying to send mail from the Exetel Webmail (that does work) - I am, though, trying to send mail from the Mail program which is configued to my Exetel mail account - synced to Outlook on my home PC. This makes sense to me ... the failure to deliver doesn't.

'Synced to my home computer' - this is IPOd Touch-speak meaning that your 'home' computer and the IPod Touch are sharing data - email, calendar, Favourites etc. By syncing my IPod to my computer I anabled all the email and calendar info to by copied onto the IPod Touch, eg ISP, POP and smtp server addresses.

you can still sync with Outlook but you need to manually configure the account, have you deleted the account and set it up again manually yet?

I have tried setting it up manually. No luck, I'm afraid.

John - Albeit a year late, I may as well post for the sake of others;

Your problem with sending is simply because you have stated your username and password.
For outgoing mail, exetel does NOT use authentication. Putting your name and password in here leads to a fail.

Cheers,
-Luke
