Cannot connect to POP server

Postby blissful on Mon Sep 28, 2015 12:05 pm

My mail app (Mail on Mac OS 10.9.5) is suddenly unable to connect to the POP server pop3.wa.exemail.com.au
I know of no changes to my system (no upgrades etc.), I can still connect to the POP server on a TPG email account, can still send emails via the exetel SMPT server smpt.nsw.exemail.com.au and can log on to Exetel's webmail.

Pinging the POP server is OK.

Any assistance would be gratefully accepted.

Are you using smtp.nsw.exemail.com.au or smtp.wa.exemail.com.au? I see that you have more than 1 email address with Exetel. Are you having issues with all the accounts or just one account?

Thanks for your reply.
I was using the nsw one (not sure why) but changing it to the wa one doesn't make any difference to the POP server connection. As mentioned, nothing has been changed on my end from what was, until yesterday, a well functioning email process.

I cannot access any of the exetel accounts.

For testing purposes, can you try pop3.nsw.exemail.com.au and check if you have the same issue? Although this is not recommended, you can check if this works for you.

Yes, that worked!

So, I guess that narrows it down to something amiss with the pop3.wa.exemail.com.au server, or at least my connection with it. I'll stay with the nsw one for now, until my wa issue is sorted.

Thanks for your advice.

I have raised this case to our sysadmins via Ticket ref # 9476163. I will let you know the outcome.

I have received an update and have received confirmation that there is no issue. Try the wa server and check again.

Ideally it should not cause any issues because they are basically the same server.

Sorry for the delay - family medical issues.

As soon as I change my Mail preference to the wa server, with everything else remaining the same, I cannot connect.

Something is amiss, but what???

I'll have this checked again.

Edit : Can you post any error messages you get? Maybe a screenshot?

This is the message when the blissful account is set to the wa server and the divine resonance one is set to the nsw server.

I'm not sure what happened (don't think it was my end) but it is suddenly working using the wa server. I'm still on port 110 - could something have been amiss there?

Thank you for your persistence angelos - I'll keep to the wa server now unless it drops the connection again.

A simple way to test connection to the server and receive any error message is to use telnet in a terminal. Like this--
$ telnet pop3.wa.exemail.com.au 110
Trying 220.233.0.76...
Connected to chestnut2-mail.exetel.com.au.
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK Dovecot ready. (Here there be dragons!)
quit
+OK Logging out
Connection closed by foreign host.

or-
$ telnet smtp.wa.exemail.com.au 25
Trying 220.233.0.8...
Connected to smtp.po.exetel.com.au.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 smtp.exemail.com.au ESMTP - Here there be dragons!
quit
221 smtp.exemail.com.au closing connection
Connection closed by foreign host.
