Cannot Connect To POP3 Server

Postby matave on Sat Aug 05, 2017 10:37 am

Is there currently an issue with mail server pop3.nsw.exemail.com.au? I ask because the authentication fails in my email client and requests a password change. Since I have not changed that password in years I played along and changed it today in Exetel's member services and updated the password in my email client to reflect the change. Still getting error message stating that authentication failed and enter new password..

There is no known issue related to our mail server. Could you please PM me the relevant email address ?

There is a simple test to check if you have a problem with the server, or whether the problem is with your mail client.

Open a terminal/DOS prompt. Some Windows users may have to enable telnet. You'll know by the reply to telnet.
Type:
telnet pop3.nsw.exemail.com.au 110
The reply you should receive is:
Connected to chestnut2-mail.exetel.com.au.
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK Dovecot ready. (Here there be dragons!)

To check your account, type
user YOUR_FULL_EMAIL_ADDRESS
The desired reply is
+OK
Now type
pass YOUR_EMAIL_PASSWORD
the desired reply is
+OK

You should get a connection. If the account login fails, the server doesn't know you. If all this works, the problem lies with your email client.

The above process fails at the pass command. I get ERR Authentication failed as a response.

The mail client that I use on my phone also will not connect despite double checking the password.
