Usenet won't connect

Post by daggy » Sun May 24, 2009 1:11 pm

is anybody have connection problems with Usenet atm.

for the past week or so I am getting connection errors trying to connect to usenetserver, this is the same server I have used for the past 3 yrs or so connecting thru newsleecher.

the error I get is; "When I try to connect my newsreader returns with the error "10060 server not found" What does this mean?

Please check the configuration of your newsreader and make sure it's configured to access news.usenetserver.com and try to connect again."

I usually connect thru port 3128 but if I've had connection issues previuosly I just change port & connection is made.

I have the same set-up on my PC as well as my laptop & neither will connect, i've also tried my other newsreader client Grabit.

I logged a job with Usenetserver & they replied that all was well on their end & suggested I do as above, which obviously I have tried to no avail.

Any suggestions?

It is a Windows error - presumably because your server is not responding. Your quote is from the usenetserver FAQ. Why don't you give the standard NNTP port 119 a try?
PS Is this really a windows firewall problem - can you get on with your malware suite disabled?

yeah I have tried all the other ports, 23 25 119 1720 3128 7000 8000 9000, they all return the same error & disconnect except for port 3128 which repeatedly tries connecting without producing the error.

no firewalls are active, it's odd how something works fine 1 day but not the next day. my setup is exactly how it's been for the past 3yrs.

i've now noticed that I can't ping news.usenetserver.com so something is blocking these ports?

i'm going to try my spare router & see if that will connect.

ok, have connected successfully with my trusty old Billion 7100, so obviously there is something going on in my usual router - 7500G.

I don't understand how or why these things seem to have a mind of their own, like I said, 1 day working fine then the next day no go:(
