Websites redirecting to other websites

Post by renwick » Mon May 25, 2009 10:42 pm

For some strange reason, some websites randomly redirect to other websites, but this goes away after half an hour or so, but is quite annoying. I try using a proxy and the website loads fine. I've tried deleting the cache and using other browsers to test (such as IE which I NEVER use) but the problem is still there. Any suggestions?

From the mention of IE, you are running a flavour of Windows, which unlike other systems, is pretty insecure. Some malware/adware types are known to be behind this behaviour (is it after a Google search?), so a good scan by your protection suite is in order.

FF has a setting (Advanced->General): Warn me when websites try to redirect. This can protect you from some scam sites.

Look up Gumblar for news of a new exploit.

No no no. I mean, normal and safe websites which I regularly use are redirecting to other websites which I also regularly use. For example, last night http://www.news.com.au was redirecting to google, and a few hours earlier the same was happening with photobucket. At first I thought it was the cache, and sometimes clearing it fixes the issue. I will do a virus/spyware scan later today.

EDIT:
Here's an example of this happening. Any images hosted in the i214 photobucket server aren't working, but redirect to google. Picture here: http://i43.tinypic.com/2z8tfew.png

Whereas if I go to exact some website (http://i214.photobucket.com/) but through a web proxy via http://proxy.org/, the page redirects to photobucket, which is normal. If I go to http://i215.photobucket.com/, for example, it redirects to photobucket fine. So it looks like it's not my problem, since the website works fine using a proxy. And just for the record I've tried clearing FF's cache with no success.

What is in your hosts file? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file Does this affect other applications beside IE and FF? eg, browsers like Opera, or downloaders? How do you obtain DNS?
