Email to SMS fails

I've logged a ticket and got a non helpful response and no response in the last 11 hours so I'll try here ...

I get the following response when attempting to send an SMS via email. The sender mobile number is verified.
The sending email addresses for name@gmail.com and name@mail.google.com have been registered with the verified mobile number but none appear to work.
The password is always copy / pasted and has been visually rechecked.

Here's what I get back from the sms gateway service as a reply email:

(number altered)
01234567@sms.exetel.com.au

Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 relay not permitted (state 14).
