AppleTV Movies Really Slow Now

Post by bluedog » Sat Nov 17, 2012 10:22 am

Until a month ago or so, I used to be able to watch 1080p movies from AppleTV live, or with very occasional, very short periods of buffering. Lately, I seem to have to download movies overnight, and they take several hours.

Does Exetel still cache AppleTV content?

Exetel newsletters back in April and May referred to the removal of the Peerapp cache - that exposed a number of P2P setups then that needed optimising. Exetel caching no longer exists. The Akamai servers co-located with Exetel provide very fast local mirrors for a number of other common uses, including Apple downloads, but I don't know where Apple TV comes from. Do you know the URL of the server? A traceroute will show if you are being connected locally or overseas.

(For traceroute on a Mac, Applications->Utilities->Terminal. In the terminal window type traceroute domain-name. Alternatively, you can use the Network Utility)

Should Akamai provide the content locally you should use the Exetel DNS to get connected.

As per the previous post, do provide us with a trace-route / ping test to the server so we can further investigate this issue. Please do email the results to residentialsupport@exetel.com.au
Along with that, kindly include your Service number as well.

It looks like iTunes is coming from the US via NZ...

1. Downloaded a previously purchased TV show from iTunes using Windows 7 and iTunes.
2. ipconfig /displaydns (note: entire output shown)

This is an older show though, and it probably wouldn't be in the cache. Making a certain cache hit will have to wait until I hire another movie. However, this download shown above was going at about the same speed that last night's download of Promethues took. I would have expected Prometheus to be in the cache and to download at high speed like it used to some weeks ago.

To complete the traceroutes, p49-buy.itunes.apple.com.akadns.net lies at hop 21, in the USA . (It won't reply to standard traceroutes and tracert). Your data stream has a long overseas and trans-USA trip to make, which will likely be the problem.

Is there a URL provided to connect to, that Exetel DNS might translate to an local Akamai server IP?

I don't know what URls are involved. I can only monitor the DNS requests.

Any help here - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3623?view ... cale=en_US? 8 Mbps for 1080p from a server so far away might be the problem. Try Standard Definition at 2.5 Mbps.
