ive also updated and scanned for viruses and trojans - i dont have a second PC to isolate that

im using a Netcomm NB6 out of Unanderra exchange.
i previously got better speeds on the same line on adsl1 !!!! 1.5Mbps

Here in Wollongong I get a similar downstream line rate to you but better actual transfer rates. For example:

Line rate 13339kbps Down 821kbps Up
SNR Margin 9dB
Attenuation 28.5dB

Test run on 30/09/2007 @ 12:27 PM

Mirror: Exetel
Data: 9 MB
Test Time: 9.02 secs

Your line speed is 8.38 Mbps (8385 kbps).
Your download speed is 1.02 MB/s (1048 KB/s).

This makes me think that perhaps the Unanderra backhaul is congested. Plus, your test was just after off-peak started which is always a busy time on the Optus link (see https://www.exetel.com.au/members/a_mrt ... _adsl2.php for graph).

What speeds do you get in the afternoon?

I'm on the Unanderra exchange aswell (ADSL2+), and I've noticed a slower connection aswell. It's not really that noticeable, but I would rather have my connection going at the speed it was a week ago, when my connection was going at 8500/650.

Maybe there's something wrong with Unanderra exchange because I've been taking speed tests every night and they all seem to be around 1000 megabit down and 500-600 up.

I just took a speed test and got these results:

Download Speed: 991 kbps (123.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 555 kbps (69.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

And as you can see below, I should be achieving around what I was before: 8500/650

Code: Select all

Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 8776 Kbps 816 Kbps
Attainable Line Rate 9796 Kbps 864 Kbps
Noise Margin 11.4 dB 13.4 dB
Line Attenuation 37.0 dB 20.3 dB
Output Power 0.0 dBm 12.8 dBm
Maybe there is actually a problem with our exchange or lines. How long have you been having slower speeds? I was fine until about a week ago, when I noticed it being a lot slower.

In case Exetel Staff are interested:

Code: Select all

Are you guys living near Blacktown (Syd) and happen to be on Optus infrastructure? Coz if you are, there is a known issue which has been referred to Optus and this may be affecting you.

According to Google Maps "from: blacktown nsw to: unanderra nsw" is 107km by road so I would not say we are "near"...

I am in Wollongong (about 5km closer to Sydney) and not experiencing the same slow speeds tx3dude gets in Unanderra.

wow!!! im flyen now. im now syncing almost half of what i had before exetels tinkering!!! my downloads have basically gone to dial up and ive had jack of this shit. Can anyone recomend a way to fix this ? Ive gone to the extreme of formatting my hard drive just in case i had spyware or a virus. Also is there any way out of my contract if they cant get their shit together??

OK you formated your hard drive and have a fresh install of XP I suppose

Did you try an isolation test ? Have ONLY your computer connected to the phone line with a short cable?

How about resetting your Modem to default and typing your userid and password again in case there is a setting in there which is wrong.

Your attenuation is reasonable, you should be getting good speeds.
