Well I guess when you are obtaining a service from Telstra (who dont make any claims above 1.5 M) then its impossible to say that the same service is going to perform any better when passed on.

Sorry, this is not correct anymore as these older threads have been removed.

Edited for correction.

outbush - you are ignoring the difference between line sync speed and the actual speed the data get sent to me by Exetel.

Nobody can guarantee a line sync of greater than 1.5Mbit... this is because the providers of the copper (in my case Telstra) do not guarantee a line sync speed above 1.5Mbit... That's fine.

Seeing as my line will sync at 8Mbit... why do Exetel not guarantee DATA TRANSFER speeds above 1.5Mbit.

Note: I am not complaining that they don't .... I am just wondering why.

Right now, I'm downloading 2 files from mirror.exetel

Total transfer speed fluctuating between 50 and 140 KBps

EDIT: and now 40KBps (8:20pm)

If your MTU is still 576, try adjusting that back to 1400.

I can't see a problem with speeds unless you can do some speed tests and post the results.

The previous test results indicated there was no problem

exetel.com.au/speed shows between 2.5 and 3Mbps... previously it was much closer to my line sync speed, which is 8Mbps.... and although some clarification as to why this is 'acceptable' would be nice... it is not my specific issue.
davewantsmoore wrote:Am having browsing issues with my connection at all times of the day and night. Pages often time out, but will load (quickly) after a number of refreshes.
Last night (8pm - 1am), I was measuring (using MTR) between 3 and 10 percent packet loss across the routes to anz.com, facebook.com and google.com... the loss began from 117.1.233.220.exetel.com.au... unfortunately I didn't manage to keep the graphs.

Apologies in advance... I hope nobody thinks I'm "having a go"... I'd just like to get this problem pinpointed and resolved - At the moment my service is at times quite frustrating to use.

All,

Can you please try speeds and advise if they have improved?

Yep. Improved. Single connection maxing out at around 300KB ... I saw spikes of 700KB with multiple connections.

Browsing issues (pages not load, but do after refresh, sometimes takes a few refreshes) still remain... but are MUCH improved also.

Tested with Linux, Mac, Windows and PDA... tried a different modem, cable, isolated, etc. No bad packets <1% (CRC errors) showing in modem status.

EDIT: 7pm... things seem good, browsing is snappy and I can get 600KBps across my connection if i push it

I just had a few minutes of nothing (100% loss) from 117.1.233.220.exetel.com.au onwards.... and then a few minutes of 10% loss starting in syd2.alter.net.... back to normal now.

I am still seeing pages not load occasionally.

Happening across different browsers, on different platforms. Have followed the stickies. Etc. etc.

I have not been able to correlate the problem with packet loss, or abnormal latency.[/i]

Still seeing browsing issues on my connection.

1st hop outside my network:
http://davehas.gotdns.com/cgi-bin/smoke ... tpc.Exetel

google.com (showing about 8pc packet loss over the past week):
http://davehas.gotdns.com/cgi-bin/smoke ... tpc.Google

Same issues continue as from original post in this thread... web pages often fail to load... but after an arbitrary number of refreshes will load without delay. This occurs both day and night, and regardless of whether the connection is under any load.

If it has any relevance... I just tested my connection @ 1.79Mbps (@2pm) from exetel.com.au/speed ... however using multiple connections to mirror.exetel I can transfer at over 6Mbps

OT
I have exceeded (last couple of days) 40GB off peak this calendar month... although as can be seen by the graphs, packet loss issues have been around longer than I've been over-quota (the last 6 to 8 weeks)

Where do I look to see if I have been placed in a pool subject to bandwidth restrictions? I looked on https://www.exetel.com.au/members/home.php but don't see anything.
