If you can work out a way for an answering machine to work on a voip ata, or modem then sure.

That should be no problem. I have one here attached to my Billion 7404VGP and it works perfectly.

I'd like to second dragon's question.
I guess different carriers will have different costs but how much does it cost us users who are on Exetel ADSL2+phone to call a VOIP number?, I can't find it anywhere on the Exetel site.

You can send faxes using the new function in the User Facilities - fax over broadband.

1)is it easy to set up voip?
i'll be getting a voip modem soon, but not the naked adsl until it is available.

2)can i use that modem as just a modem until i get voip.

3)and is the voip part of the modem just another port on the modem and i just plug in telephone to that?
1) It's pretty easy.

2) Yes.

3) It depends on the modem - usually yes.

I live 800km from Sydney if my voip is routed through there will people calling me from a standard phone be charged STD rates. E.g. Would my mate in the same town only be billed a local call charge when he calls me or would he pay STD rates :?:

If you select the Sydney DID then I imagine he would be charged STD rates.

Exetel plans to provide DID's for most capital cities, and major regional areas (Newcastle).

I talked to telstra and they said it would range from $59 - $200something, depending.

If you already have the wiring laid, its $59ish. If you need a tech to come out, it goes up.

You can check out telstra's website and search for it :)

I'll share my experience trying to get the phone line activated in an old apartment. We moved in and it already had a phone point installed, however the line hadnt been activated for about 3 years so there was no tone when then handset was lifted.

It ended up costing $250.00, as an engineer had to come onsite. Something I didn't consider would ever be required, as there was already a line coming into the house.
