Gaming Speed Issues

Post by dvestate » Wed Mar 05, 2008 10:02 am

Hi guys,

I have noticed over the last few months I've been having increasing Latency when playing 'Live for Speed' online via my Exetel ADSL2 connection (to various different servers). I don't seem to have a problem with DL speeds mostly gaming and sometimes web-browsing speed does seem to drop.

I have tested via my work provided Telstra NextG AirCard and I don't have any problem.

Just wondering if there is anything else I can do from my end to look at resolving the issue? I have already done a full reset with my modem and tested with a Netcomm that I grabbed from work.

Thanks
Michael

Live for Speed - http://www.lfs.net/

Online racing SIM, pretty tough to play when really laggy.... as I say only happened over the last 3-4 weeks, as I race 2-3 times a week in comp's its getting more frustrating :)

I did have in the past very low pings for Aussie based servers, but getting the kind of speeds that I was getting from the US or Europe.

Tried leaving the modem off for extended periods, testing in isolation and hard resetting the modem but nothing much seems to work. Not sure if there is a physical line set that can be looked at from your end.

I think the last time I had this kind of problem (ages ago) you guys did something at your end to fix it up.

A special work around has been set up for you as your game was being mis-identified as P2P.

Please test again and let us know any improvement.

Tested last night and it was back to normal. Thank you for the quick response and fix to the problem.

Once again one of the very few problems that I have experienced with my connection over the years was fixed.

Thanks again Exetel Support :)

Hi

Could I also get a check because I am getting pretty bad packet loss and lag with quake 2.

The server I play on ip is 203.206.95.1:27910.

Miroku, could you please identify the game you are attempting to play as well?

Hi,
I was just playing Team Fortress 2 as usual and the pings were getting worse and worse and worse. Then I was dropped from the game. It's now 12:39 qld time and the throughput has gone to shit.

Test run on 09/03/2008 @ 01:38 AM
Mirror: Exetel
Data: 9 MB
Test Time: 87.07 secs
Your line speed is 868 kbps (0.87 Mbps).
Your download speed is 109 KB/s (0.11 MB/s).

Image

To be fair this isn't only a problem when playing games but anything I would like to do right now. It's just that the game getting laggy / dropping out shit me off the most.

This has improved lately and now I seem to only be getting a 20% packet loss, not > 50% so I am thankful for that.

Ping statistics for 64.233.187.99:
Packets: Sent = 39, Received = 31, Lost = 8 (20% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 251ms, Maximum = 275ms, Average = 256ms

In fact, I got to play games for nearly an hour longer than I used to be able to (a couple weeks or so ago). But ideally I'd like something closer to the service I signed up for. Otherwise I'd rather not be paying for half a service considering this is the time that I'm likely to be using it, not during the day when I'm at work.

Any chance of a solution?

I'm going to update that last post, (but not by actually using the edit function). HTTP has apparently totally fallen over for me. I'm on my laptop using a 3G data card because I can't access the Exetel forum from my Exetel service. And I can't get to google either. Funnily enough I can still ping google with like a 25% loss but trying to open the page has taken a couple of minutes already and is still going.

So not saying the Exetel service is useless is quite literal. I'd love to do another speed test for you but I can't open any of the sites.
So bugger this. I'm going to bed. And tomorrow I shall have to investigate my options for churning to another provider and getting some of my money back for this 'service' that has Exetel 'provided'.

Maz,

Can you please confirm the sync speed that your router reports? And can you also please try tracerouting the game server, as well as google, so that the point that the packet loss occurs can be identified?

Churning to another service provider may not necessarily help your situation, particularly if the issue is related to your PC or line. However, you have not yet provided enough information for us to be able to identify this so the above tests will start giving us a bit more useful information.
