Age of Conan & General Speed Issues

Post by tyorll » Tue May 06, 2008 3:59 am

Hi guys,

I've tried to put up with my speed problems for some time now, but AoC is getting very close to release (17th May) and my speed issues have not resolved. My main concern with AoC is the latency after 12 midnight through to 12 midday. During prime hours the latency is tolerable at around 300ms (could be better... but still playable), however as soon as the clock strikes 12 I may as well quit playing... and most of my playtime is during the hours of 12 midnight ->6am so it's not really adequate. The issue at midnight is all of a sudden the latency starts to spike. Evey 15-30 seconds the ping will jump from 300ms to anywhere upwards of 9000-10000ms which means my gameplay is like run -> attempt to kill something in 10-15 seconds of stable play -> then wait for lag spike to end, or if I am unlucky I find myself dead as the server has not received any of my keystrokes for 20-30 seconds and I spend the next 2-3 minutes running back to retrieve a corpse. It ruins the experience of the game, and doesn't do my impression of Exetel's service much good either.

Please is there some way that games (namely WoW, AoC, popular FPS games) can get priority? Release is JUST around the corner, and I am hoping I can stick with exetel to continue playing in this fashion.

The other concern I have is purely related to speed and dropouts. My speedtest result when the ADSL2+ was first enabled was not too bad. It was reporting ~5000 mbit downstream. Now however I cannot get it above 1000mbit!

I find myself having to reset my router occasionally as occasionally I see the following tests in my modem diagnostics fail (currently all saying pass... but I notice my connection sometimes drops out and when it does the diagnostics appear as follows:
----------------------------------------------
Test the connection to your local network
Test your ENET(1-4) Connection: PASS
Test your Wireless Connection: PASS

Test the connection to your DSL service provider
Test ADSL Synchronization: PASS
Test ATM OAM F5 segment ping: PASS
Test ATM OAM F5 end-to-end ping: PASS

Test the connection to your Internet service provider
(Typically these settings that fail... sometimes even a mix of passes and fails here)
Test PPP server connection: FAIL
Test authentication with ISP: FAIL
Test the assigned IP address: FAIL
Ping default gateway: FAIL
Ping primary Domain Name Server: FAIL
------------------------------

My modem statistics are as follows:

I hope I've provided enough info so that someone with more knowledge than me can make heads or tails of it! Using a TP-LINK TD-W8920G 108M Wireless ADSL2+ Router and Linksys PAP2 VoIP adapter. I have the ADSL2+ Splitter installed that was supplied with the modem as well. My plan is a Naked DSL plan.

Kind regards,

I think the problem has gone. At lease for me..

Starting having speed issues since i changed over to ADSL2+ on 1/5/2007 and all of a sudden, i tested my line again this morning at 9am. It is all working fine.

Look like the Optus ADSL2+ mantainance work has fixed the issue. (may not be right, but at least for me)

I play EVE online most days/nights, and don't notice any issues after midnight, except the usual JITA lag.

My speed is still dropping quite significantly once the clock strikes 12 =(

Most of my time using the net is after 12am. Yesterday my speed test was about 700kilobit from the Exetel speed test found here:
http://www.exetel.com.au/speed/

Today from Ozspeedtest results as follows 3MB test:
Broadband Speed Test Results

Test run on 10/05/2008 @ 02:30 AM

Mirror: Exetel
Data: 3 MB
Test Time: 11.57 secs

Your line speed is 2.12 Mbps (2118 kbps).
Your download speed is 265 KB/s (0.26 MB/s).

I am not using the net for anything except web browsing atm.
AoC has been playing better these last couple of nights but the downstream from any source is very slow. Still sync is > 18MBit. During the day my speed tests are ~15Mbit or thereabouts.

I was hoping that might be part of the problem. I've used just over 2gb of my 48gb off peak this month, so plenty of GB allowance to spare.
Trying to download the AoC retail client and only getting 30-40kb/s downstream which means it won't be downloaded in time for launch at this rate if I am to only download during off-peak hours.

Don't understand why my speed is being throttled so much at 12am on the dot. From > 15Mbit mostly before 12am... <1Mbit after 12am :?

12:33am this morning from exetel servers.
