I'm using this software as I reply to your post. Its a freeware software that ensure anonymous and censor free internet usage. I personally use my laptop from remote/hotel connections even if my connection is established via secure vpn tunnel. There are software's that records keystrokes and takes screen shots without you knowing, so try to avoid using internet cafe's for online banking.

Well, it wouldn't be for netcafes. But it would be for using a wifi access point.
I know there are some ozzie banks that restrice access to ozzie IP addresses

The software you suggested looks good and it comes some really good features but I haven't tested all it's features. My suggestion is to keep an eye for fraudulent hotspots. A hacker can setup his open hotspot near a valid one by simply configuring his/her notebook to transmit a wireless signal. Some wireless notebooks are configured to connected to the nearest or strongest signal by default, try to disable this feature and verify the name of the hotspots in restaurants or airports ...

Correct me if I'm wring but a VPN is not necessary for banking as you are on a secure connection anyway. Any packet sniffers can see that you have a "pipe" connection) to our bank, but can't see what is "inside the pipe" (ie the actual data) as it is encrypted by https.
The VPN is mainly to protect non-encrypted surfing, eg connecting to your office.
Personally I simply use the free version of www.LogMeIn.com
to connect to home and then go from there if I need security etc.
