Steam Content Server?

Post by thomashouseman » Sat Jul 02, 2011 12:59 pm

Have Exetel ever investigated getting a Steam Games content server? I notice now that you have both a Google and Akamai server, why not a steam one too?

Akamai and Google are server clusters which deliver, between them, over 1.6 gbps of data at peak times and therefore play a significant part in reducing IP costs and therefore customer plan costs.

What can a 'steam' server do in that regard?

Yup Dazzled. A server like that. They can be restricted to Exetel only customers or open to the general public as a service to them.

All the source files for all Steam games would be stored on these servers instead of users downloading from the internet.

I've asked a senior sysadmin to give you Exetel's current views.

Thanks. If you could somehow measure how much traffic exetel users download from all the steam servers out there, I suspect you may be surprised. But then again I could be quite wrong. It'd be an interesting measurement though.

Hi,

We'll be investigating the possibility for doing this. At the moment, we have little to no info available as to Valve's requirements for their download cluster (or, even, if they'd want us to host it) so it's pointless to provide definites. As I find out more I (or a games admin) will post here.

Yeah, got that. Waiting for them to get back to us (still). I'm not wild about the idea of leaving an RDP port open to the internet as a whole so I am hoping that, at least, we can restrict access to that. There's also the price of the box involved, which is... interesting as well as whether or not we really want a windows server on our network.

I'm interested in this, does it mean that any request for data from a Steam server is instead redirected to a local server maintained by Exetel?
