One quota to rule them all...

Ok so it has been a long week :)

Not sure if this is possible/feasible but would be a fantastic differentiator...

What if Exetel offered allocated quota and how you access that quota is irrelevant, e.g. mobile dongle or adsl or tethering or mobile phone etc?

So you get a pooled quota across multiple access devices? Then you just purchase/rent X sim cards, ADSL, phone ect. For things that are wireless you could still count the uploads etc.

Most likely not possible as even the infrastructure owners are not doing this.

This isn't the first time this has been raised. It is difficult to do because a GB of data with mobile broadband costs a lot more than a GB over ADSL1/2+, so any time you used your mobile broadband you would be taking massive chunks out of that shared quota.

From what I understand though, Exetel have looked into grouping a whole bunch of SIMs to one quota (on their premium line of plans). My guess is that Optus didn't go for it, or Exetel decided it was too hard to implement. Allowing multiple services to share the one quota means the average quota usage (and therefore the price) of particular plans will/might rise. Considering Exetel hardly make any money from their HSPA services it is a gutsy thing to do if they can't figure a way of minimising that downside.

There are business services that link multiple SIMs to one traffic allowance.
