DNS entry 58.96.1.28

Post by woodle » Wed Dec 05, 2012 6:35 am

I've just set up a new modem/router, a Billion 7800VDPX, and it's saying that the primary DNS server is 58.96.1.28. The secondary is 220.233.0.3, which I know is one of the Exetel ones. Is this first one OK?

Hi woodle,

You can manually assign the DNS to the following:

Primary DNS: 220.233.0.4
Secondary DNS: 220.233.0.3

:)

Thanks, I'm aware of that. My question was "Is that DNS setting OK?"

Why is my router getting that other IP address when I set it to get DNS settings automatically? Is there malware in the router or is that what Exetel is sending it?

And if it is Exetel sending it, why do I need to change it? Why doesn't Exetel just send the correct settings?

Do you have dig installed (a tool for interrogating domain name servers with human-readable replies) ? dig @58.96.1.28 <put-url-here> will return the usual DNS lookup. It isn't malware.

I'm getting the same Primary DNS server address as 58.96.1.28 too. Presumably we can just deselect "Obtain DNS Automatically" and assign the correct address?
