While im blocked for the internet for a few hours i thought i would let you know that the link to Spybot on : http://blocked.exetel.com.au/spam.php doesn't actually contain definitions so you cant scan your computer with it.


Also i'm guessing the reason for my blockage is a virus that was on a machine here and was removed yesterday - are these blockages delayed or instant?

The blocks are delayed.

Yep - the spybot link there is useless. In addition, when I tried to update the definitions for AVG, it wouldn't let me (invalid Control file).

Not being able to scan the system kind of nullifies the ability to clean the system. So, basically when I click the "please let me back onto the internet" button, Exetel is forcing me to lie, and then making me wait three hours for the privilege.

I've run the old version of avast I had lying around, and it says no problem. Same as the not-updated version of AVG. I'd love to go grab a copy of some of the better Malware software going, BUT I CAN'T GET ONTO THE INTERNET.

While customer service is not why I'm with Exetel, this is one of the worst ideas I've seen since Telstra emailed you to tell you that your email was down.

Thanks for pointing out that the mirror is out of date when it comes to Windows malware finders. I'll pass the message along, and hopefully we'll get a better outcome in future.

Malware though is a Windows problem. Those who have a Mac handy can get on line again immediately without deception. So can those with a Linux machine on their network, and fortunately there are any number of self-booting CDs in all kinds of flavours that get can get an infected computer online straightaway for urgent jobs with security.

Some of these (eg Ubuntu, on the mirror) are complete desktop computers, some (eg Trinity TRK) were actually designed to repair damaged Windows. Some (eg Puppy) are tiny and fit on the smallest USB stick with room to spare. I'll also ask if something suitable can be mirrored and linked to the block page. These CDs can obtain up to date software on line without risk of offending again.

If you can keep at hand a repair CD do so. The Linux based ones are readily available, free, safe and completely legitimate. There are also Windows self-booting techies' CDs (eg Hiren's) circulating in some quarters, of very doubtful copyright status and origin, but I'd prefer to trust the Linux jobs.
Some Windows malware protection companies supply reliable self booting scanner CDs to keep ready in the drawer also.

Personally, I'd rather a flawed block page than the default industry practice of letting spam continue unabated. It is easy to notify Exetel about your issues (suggestions box for instance) and have them provide update links. You can also try mirror.exetel.com.au and see if there are any other virus scanners available (blocked connections should still have access to Webmail, forums, and mirror services.

You also have other options available to you:
* Download an up to date virus scanner from another computer and copy to USB stick
* Stop any rogue processes that you can, possibly even start up in Safe Mode with Networking, then unblock yourself and download and update a virus scanner of your choice, then take yourself offline and perform a full system scan. Exetel don't mind you "lying", more that you are making a concerted effort to remove the infection from your computer. Even if you are reblocked a few times, it is all automated and doesn't expend any of Exetel's resources.
