I thought so too , BUT I pinged the servers on http://www.iptools.com and found the host servers were unreachable at the time.

I re-announced all the torrents for the unreachable hosts and succeeded downloading them without problems.
For one torrent I couldn't find a tracker that I could reach so I used one of the ones I found for the other torrents I was having problems with
and by the morning, hey presto it had completed. This only worked because the other two downloads were of the same type which frequently proliferates throughout the ww web of trackers.

I'm working of some web-based tools to help identify this problem and assist people getting to trackers that they can actually connect to.

watch this space.
[UPDATE]
The site is up and running (sort of) its at http://btreannouncer.kritical-it.com/
[/UPDATE]

PS: if you're on linux/unix/cygwin and have the python bittorrent tools installed the following oneliner will help you see if the
tracker hosts are reachable

run it in the directory/folder where all your torrent files are

for f in $(ls *.torrent); do host=$(btshowmetainfo "${f}" | grep "announce" | sed -e "s/^.*http:\/\///i;s/:.*$//i;s/\/announce//i"); ping -c 5 $host; done

:)

Hi folks,

I've developed a web-based tool (and am working on a client app) to help find more trackers for torrents and subsequently reannounce torrents with the new list of tracker announce urls.

How it works: basically you upload a torrent, which gets parsed then the app attempts to find trackers for the torrent.
You are then presented with an opportunity to re-announce the torrent and download the modified torrent.
Only announce urls are modified if requested - nothing else is changed.

If there are no other trackers that have that torrent you will only get back what was in the torrent file to start with.

If your bittorrent client supports the announce-list specification (extension to the bittorrent spec) the re-announced torrent should work well with your client.

Try it out at http://btreannouncer.kritical-it.com/

I dont have a forum up yet to get feedback, feature request, bug reports ..etc, i focused on getting it working and making it available.
I'll get a forum up over the next few days.

[UPDATE 01:Tue Aug 12 22:47:09 EST 2008]
I forgot to include the standard workaround for curl CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION problem when is safe mode or open_basedir is set.
Applied the patch, should all be working now.

Hi.

Old thread, but still interesting. (I'm a fan of the movie, 1984)

Before I ask my question.

Here's the ACMA promoting the recording of copyrighted material to permanent hard storage without copyright holder permission.

Having shown that, I tried to excess thepiratebay.se today without success.
(to check my software isn't being illegally seeded)

I used http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ and it's showing TPB is online.

So how do I visit that site without using proxies, or is it just me?

I just tried it, and reached the site home page successfully. Straightforward response to GET / HTTP/1.1 from a browser:
