Tracker connection issue

Im on exetel, since yesterday i havnt been able to make any connections to trackers, specifically public ones. I have been using bittorrent for years and never seen anything like this.

At the moment im relying on the distributed network for peers.

I run an ipcop box with all the right routes and forwarding, i tried replacing it with a spare netcomm with no luck. Manually setting a non exetel dns addess doesnt help either, im pretty good with this stuff. I dont believe the problem is my end.

I have also tried manually injecting alternate tracker addresses with no luck.

I know of other people on exetel experiencing this problem. A whirlpool thread has started here:

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-re ... ?t=1015054

I know tpb has been suffering stabilities issues, but this is effecting other trackers as well.

Pings to a lot of trackers simply time out.

I have had a look at your reported difficulties and some of the comments posted by other (apparent) Exetel users elsewhere.

I have asked someone to look in to this further.

I have been trace routing connections to popular public trackers which i wont name here and after they pass exetels network they drop. It could be upstream?

Thanks for looking into it.

Please post the IP addresses you can't reach, if you know them.

vip.tracker.thepiratebay.org
open.tracker.thepiratebay.org
tpb.tracker.thepiratebay.org

I'm having issues connecting to anything like the following;
vip.tracker.thepiratebay.org
open.tracker.thepiratebay.org
tpb.tracker.thepiratebay.org

Private trackers seem to be fine but most of the public ones are red-lighting me immediately.

so it's not just me then

I've similarly been having this issue since early in the week and can confirm that it's an issue connecting to certain trackers.

I Also have been having this problem,

I've logged a fault AND spoken to exetel's support a number of times.
I've been told that they will contact me when the problem has been resolved.
if/when they do I'll post here.

I noticed that things were working for a few hours yesterday [Fri Jul 18 14:09:06 EST 2008 Australian Time]
but as at [Sat Jul 19 11:30:53 EST 2008 Australian Time] it was broken again.
Right now [Sat Jul 19 14:35:53 EST 2008] its still broken.

There is a workaround for your torrents.
This is the way I do it - ymmv.

1) Determine the hash value embedded within the torrent file.
2) in the google search input field, paste the hash followed by the word announce
as an example paste the following into google's search box
3bc2c61c420a62de7442e44698e6aed05a499078 announce
3) Check google's results looking for full urls like http://sometracker.someserver.somecon/announce
if it looks like there are a couple of different announce url's go to the site OR load google's cached
version of the page and locate the list of trackers/announce urls.
4) in turn ping each of the servers that host the annouce url. eg: ping sometracker.someserver.somecon
if you get a response however slow, it means there is a route to the tracker.
5) replace the tracker inside the torrent with one you can successfully ping.

There are tools that are part of the python bittorrent suite that will help.
btshowmetainfo - will display the hash (as well as the trackers)
btreannounce - will replace the trackers inside the torrent file.
For me they are part of a linux installation so for winblows YMMV.

I use a headless linux torrent downloader (transmissioncli for those who are interested)
Many torrent clients gui's these days support adding trackers to a torrent.
I'm not sure about clients that display the torrent hash.

There IS a web based tool that may or may not be of assistance to you in
the task of updating trackers in a torrent file here: http://www.torrenteditor.com/

I hope this helps folks while we all wait for exetel to resolve this issue

Cheers
