High latency while using Ventrilo and World of Warcraft

Post by alpacca » Sun Apr 05, 2009 11:02 am

Hi,

We had our connection temporarily suspended on Friday due to payment problems and had it fixed straight away via Credit Card. Ever since then we have had high latency whilst playing World of Warcraft online and using Ventrilo (a sydney based VOIP server). Usually on WoW our latency is around 400ms this weekend it has been on average around 1000ms, ventrilo normal 40ms, this weekend ~200-700, both getting spikes up to 4000ms.

Prior to the suspension and reconnection on Friday there have been no problems, but this weekend has made it almost unplayable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Matt

I just did a tracert to my Ventrilo server and this is what it looked like:

Any ideas who to contact to get this fixed?

having the same issue. did a tracert also

heh, just realised we're connecting to the same vent server, also theres another exetel user who goes on there that i know of who's been getting the same lag. also i get the lag in wow and on internode cod5 servers.

edit: i've had it since about mid way last week?

edit2: this is what happens to my cod5 server list after midnight

http://i40.tinypic.com/14kbe49.jpg

all the other aus servers are somewhere in the 300 range.

I was having extremely high amounts of lag in Wow last night as well from about 8pm onwards.

1500-2000ms was typical - the lowest it reached was about 800ms.

Normally achieve 200ms average through Wowtunnels.com

These speeds were both laggy using the tunneling service and without.

Also in the Newcastle area.

Hi,

This looks interesting, if this is affecting a few of your servers then it could be a potential issue.

Can you please answer the follow.

- what is the server address. (wowtunnels.com)
- where is this server located.
- where is the ventrilo server located.
- about when did this issue start.
- if or when does this problem start (as some have previously stated, 8pm onwards. )

i only usually go on the ventrilo server that i tracet'd after midnight, and wow im on all the time and its running fine right now (300ms @ 11pm) don't know how its gonna go after midnight. cod5 problems start after midnight, and theres only 3-4 servers that are playable after midnight.

i just find it crap because im on that vent most nights and i cant join in on the css/war3 with them because i cant hear anything on vent.

ventrilo server is hosted by bigpond in sydney

edit: heres a netstat, only connected to WoW, MSN, Gamesurge + Exetel irc and the vent server
vent: ga0215.gamearena.com.au:20570
gamesurge:irc.rokscom.nl:6667 (no lag issues)
WoW Server (Barthilas Oceanic): 12-129-225-102.attens.net:3724

edit: now midnight, was fine on vent from 11:30 til 12 with 30 ping, now getting spikes to 500 with noone talking

I posted this same question in a ticket to bigpond server rentals and this is the reply i got
Hi,

This pretty clearly indicates there are problems with those ALTER.NET addresses, which is before your connection even gets to GameArena.

You may want to talk to your ISP about routing issues through these points and see if there is something they can to do about it.
I had really bad lag last night after midnight to the vent server 203.46.105.45 to the point that I had to disconnect as it was getting on my nerves, constant ms was around 4-500 at best with massive spikes over 20k at the time of all this my connection to wow was a little below average but nothing near the lag on vent.

Currently as I type this my vent ping is jumping from 33 while noone is talking to 400-500 as someone starts to transmit and then spiking to 6k shortly afterwards.

I was on this same vent server all day today from around 10am until 4pm and not a single problem, it only seems to happen late at night.

As a side note, noone else that uses my vent server is with exetel, and NOONE else is having problems.

getting the lag on the vent server right now and its only 11:30 although not as bad as after 12. it spikes to 500 sometimes and thats it. after 12 i drop out and the lot

edit: its now 12 and im timing real bad (19k pings every few seconds then when i catch up all the conversation goes at once and sounds terrible so i end up disconnecting and reconnecting to the same thing)

also when i tracert the server i sometimes get spikes on 316.ge-5-0-0.GW5.SYD2.ALTER.NET and none of the others

Logged in to vent this morning and was greeted by lag, I am also logged in to WoW with no lagg problems whatsoever.

10:30 am

If anyone from exetel is there feel free to PM me and I can give you full details and you can log in to my vent and see for yourself.

i found another ventrilo server it happens on, another gamearena server hosted in melbourne
it goes through the same hops (ALTER.NET) so it may indeed be the problem

Image

edit: this is one of the other vent servers i use, no lag at any time, doesn't use ALTER.NET

I don't know anything about Ventrillo (and this doesn't actually answer your issue) but If you are taking about hop 2 you can ignore it. This is simply an Exetel router that doesn't respond to tracert's. But you can see that the traffic gets out past hop 2 and all the way to the 10Gbps link, meaning that hop 2 is not causing any problems.

i'm talking about hop 3 where in the 1st tracert 1 times out and in the 2nd 2 time out.
also i was on ventrilo again tonight from 9-12 and it was fine with MINOR spikes. then after 12 it's gone to shit and timing out and lagging (the voice comes through about 30-1 min late) which isn't really good when im trying to play counter-strike and need to hear calls

I'm still not sure this is relevant to the issue. The remainder of the tracerts get through without increased delay or time outs in later hops, meaning hops 2 through 4 are passing the packets onwards.

I'm not saying there's no problem. I'm just saying that I don't think these tracerts show anything significant (although both you and alpacca get similar behaviour on that same Exetel hop, don't you?) You might try sending WilliamC a PM asking for an update
