ADSL2+ Speeds (Donc East) <4Mbs..?

Post by tonyg0071 » Thu Aug 13, 2009 12:18 am

Hi All

I have recently returned to Exetel to move to an ADSL2+ speed. I am wondering what average speeds others are getting. My speed tests on "speedtest.net" never exceed 3.87 Mb/s and I was interested to hear from others if that was average. I am about 3 km from my exchange (Doncaster East, Vic). Given that distance I was hoping to get speeds of around 8Mbit.

My ADSL modem configuration is as follows...
Model Name: Billion BiPAC 7402L
Hardware Version: Argon 432 ADSL-A v1.00
Software Version: 5.73
Primary DNS: 220.233.0.3
Secondary DNS: 220.233.0.4
PPPoE WAN Link: VPI / VCI: 8 / 35
Rx: 286373/ 3113
Tx: 171430/ 246
Ethernet Rx : 165582/ 0
Tx : 282199/ 0
Connect Mode: ADSL2+, auto-fallback
Modulation: G.Dmt.BisPlusAuto
Profile Type: MAIN
Activate Line: true
Coding Gain: auto
Tx Attenuation: Bis_0DB
DSP Firmware Version: E.67.2.83
Connected: true
Operational Mode: Bis
Annex Type: ADSL2A
Upstream: 691100
Downstream 4499400
CO Vendor: IFTNq

Kind Thanks to All
Tony

Your speeds are consistent with your sync speed of 4.5Mpbs, which is lower than average but still ballpark for a 3km line length. See http://www.exetel.com.au/pdf/downstream.pdf.

The speed estimators used by, say, http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au and shown on sites like http://www.internode.on.net/residential ... l/extreme/ are theoretical maximum speeds and assume perfect quality cable. Realistically, speeds are often much lower than this and while yours is slightly lower than may be expected, it isn't unheard of.

i'm using the Mitcham exchange and i'm 2.5-3km away. I'm also getting the same speed of 3-3.8 Mb/s, i thought that is a bit slow too but nothing you or Exetel can do to increase the speed. Exetel tried to reset the port for me but no improvement at all. I tried the isolation test and all and nothing wrong with my equipments, it looks like that is the faster i can get.

If you have a different modem available you might want to try switching it. Sometimes different modems can lead to 0.5-1Mbps of speed difference

My modem is Dynalink RTA1046VW, I read in one of the post saying that by changing the adsl filter can also increase the bandwidth.

Sure, that can also lead to some potential speed improvements. The Dynalink is actually rated fairly highly in terms of sync speed performance so I don't think there is much potential, in your case, for higher speeds.
