Intolerable slow speed during the offpeak time
Intolerable slow speed during the offpeak time
I consistently get very slow speed during off-peak time every single day while getting 4-5Mbits/sec during peak time. This is the test results a few minutes ago: 10:10am 16 August 2009:
"Your current bandwidth reading is:
482.90kbps
which means you can download at 60.36 KB/sec. from our servers."
I assure you this is not the worst case. The worst I have got is below 100kps. I know it is not a hardware/configuration issue. The modem syncs at 6000kbps and the speed returns to normal every afternoon. This is at courtesy of the offpeak downloading. The usability is often much worse than the 512/128 plan which I signed up with Exetel in 2004!
This means my exetel internet is virtually useless 50% of the time every day! This also implies that the VOIP is not workable 50% of the time. Not happy!!
Why not reduce the offpeak time so that most users are not badly affected? I propose that offpeak download be limited to 2am-7am.
I know people are saying that the large offpeak download is the "feature" that distinguishes Exetel from other ISPs. They say "If you don't like it, then you churn away". I say who would like to use a service that is not consistently usable? I don't believe Exetel does not want business from "normal" internet users who use moderate bandwidth and just want a reliable internet connection. If I am wrong, I will have no choice but to churn away!

Re: Intolerable slow speed during the offpeak time
Jim, it's not happening here (ADSL2, Northern Sydney). What sort of service do you have, and where?
Re: Intolerable slow speed during the offpeak time
Dazzled,
I am with the Hurstville Exchange. My plan is INCPHONE A ADSL2+ 18GB peak time (I normally use 9GB) download and 54GB offpeak (I normally use 3GB).

It's a local problem then. A staff member may be along later who might be able to look a bit further.
Re: Intolerable slow speed during the offpeak time
Exetel is very slow during off peak periods. Youtube is unusable and http downloads are very slow. I don't use torrents.
The way to fix the problem is for exetel to halve the off peak quota so that less data flows through the network.
Edit:
Here's my current speedtest:

Normally I get about 7000kb/s during peak periods.

I certainly support this proposal.
Re: Intolerable slow speed during the offpeak time
By the way, I'm on ADSL2+ and in Parramatta (Sydney). Off peak is practically unusable at times.

It's now afternoon and I'm back to normal speeds:

Off peak is not working out and is not good enough. Is Exetel going to do anything to fix the problem?

Re: Intolerable slow speed during the offpeak time
I have to agree with you guys. Although I download around 25gig per month, these slow downs are becoming ridiculous. my modem syncs at around 17mbps, out of that I get a connection speed between 4mbps and 7.5mbps but from 7:00pm all the way through till about midnight I slow right down to well below average. these are my current test results:
Exetel Server:
Your current bandwidth reading is:
483.10kbps
which means you can download at 60.39 KB/sec. from our servers.
If you ask me, thats pretty poor considering I live less than 600m from my telephone exchange.
By the way I'm on the Long Jetty exchange on the central coast NSW.
