ADSL2+ Speed for Mitcham Exchange

Post by dtn22 » Wed Aug 19, 2009 2:27 pm

Hi,

Just a survey for those using the Mitcham exchange in Melbourne. I like to see what kind of speed you're getting, could you also provide me which modem you use and how far are you from the exchange?

Thanks in advance.
Dan

I get from 3-4 Mb/s using Dynalink RTA1046VW, i'm 2.5-3 Km away from the exchange.

Your speeds of 3-4Mbps are consistent with the sync speed, and the sync speed is consistent with the line attenuation (which is quite high). However, that line attenuation is probably slightly higher than usual for only being 2.5-3km away. Not much higher mind you, www.exetel.com.au/pdf/downstream.pdf shows stats around the same vicinity. It probably boils down to an average or below average quality phone line between you and the exchange; nothing that can really be done about that I'm afraid.

One thing though, if your modem is able to negotiate an ADSL2+ modulation (currently you are syncing using G.DMT or ADSL1 modulation) you might be able to increase your upload speeds to double what they are now, but otherwise, your download speeds are only slight below average for your distance.

I've check the setting and the default setting had all the check box ticks including ADSL2+ modulation. Should i just leave the ADSL2+ and un-tick the rest?

Yes. You can try that. If by doing that, your modem doesn't get any sync, then it means that the line attenuation is too high to negotiate an ADSL2+ connection. In which case, revert the settings (or just leave ADSL2+ and G.DMT ticked)
