ADSL 2+ Speeds inn off peak

It seems that recently my download speeds in off peak are really slow compared to my peak times. I download files (not through P2P) and in peak times I get 500KBps and in off peak I get 30-100KBps.

Looking through all the threads other people seem to be having the same issue. It's frustrating.

Whats changed? The network upgrade, throttling on off peak times?

Yes it's quite bad (Parramatta ADSL2+). This is typical of off-peak ADSL2+ with Exetel.

So if I pay for 60GB for off peak how do Exetel expect me to down;load it when I can't get any speed at off peak times to download?

I do not use P2P? I use Rapidshare.

Now I have been fine up until about a week or two ago so something has changed. Hope it gets better.

I'm getting a tad frustrated too now (on the Granville exchange). Down to 700kbps. About a minute ago I had 4Mbps. But generally 300kbps and below for about a week or two.

Around 9am this morning it felt like dial-up, it was shocking. So I thought I'd register and see what's going on.

Right now usually I can get up to 13mb/sec, this morning is was about 0.3mb/sec. Almost unusable to download anything.

I would expect it to be a bit slower during off peak times but not to that extent, surely that isn't normal?

Over the next few days we will implement one last change to the network due to finalising our redesign to a fully decentralised topology and then we will assess what this delivers over the month of September.

That was posted on Wed Aug 26, 2009 10:00 pm. That day of a day later my problems with offpeak started.

I have gotten 550KB/s transfer speeds at times in the last few weeks during the off-peak period so I don't think it is correct to state that such slow off-peak speeds are "typical". But I will admit there has been somewhat of a surge in slow speed threads on these forums in the last month or so. Bandwidth management is an issue that requires constant monitoring and adaptation and there have been intervals in the past where Exetel's off-peak performance has similarly been called into question but these have, in general, been rectified.

I have always suspected that there are congestion spots due to exchange capacity bottlenecking speeds but this is purely speculation on my part as I don't have the technical expertise to fully explain it, but something like this may explain why some services run smoothly and others experience degradation.

The only official avenue is to lodge a slow speed fault via residentialsupport@exetel.com.au, though if I were suffering from similar issues, I'd be giving Exetel some time to adjust and react and perhaps keep an eye on http://johnl.blogs.exetel.com.au/ and http://steve.blogs.exetel.com.au/ for talk about Exetel developments (both business and network based).

Edit: Found a post at http://johnl.blogs.exetel.com.au/index. ... ......html, back on 27 August, which states, in part:

Personally, after all the years of trying, I can see only two ways of resolving the 'midnight' issue. The first way is what we have set out to do at the moment - put back the start time of 'off peak' to 2 am...
We looked at the situation from a different perspective and realised that there was quite possibly a different solution that we had created the opportunity of delivering that none of our competitors could copy and that would be totally 'clean' and offer an even more attractive solution that any previous iteration we had tried to implement. It only requires finding one or more 'partners' willing to look outside the pricing 'me tooism' so entrenched in this industry and come up with a different pricing structure to take advantage of the facts that have been known for decades.

I discussed this possibility with one possible 'partner' earlier this week and have raised it by email with another one and will hopefully get some sort of positive response in the near future which will allow us to finalise a contract over the coming few weeks. If we can do that then we can almost certainly bring another true innovation to broadband downloads and pricing for the Australian marketplace....one with very real customer benefits....and very real Exetel + Partner benefits.
