Constance drop out at Newcastle

Post by brianlhm » Thu Dec 31, 2009 12:19 pm

Hi,

I am in Newcastle (WOLFE exchange). I am experiencing constance drop out every 15 minutes since 29th December night.

The modem (Edimax AR-7084gA) is the only device connected to the phone line. And here are the things that I have done many times and do not resolve anything:
1) Shut the modem down for 15 minutes.
2) changing the phone line
3) changing from PPPoE to PPPoA

I have also noticed even though I am on a ADSL2 plan and I have the correct settings in the modem, but it always stuck to G.DMT.

And I have just found out, when the connection drop off, the down stream SNR will drop to -4.0 db.

Here is part of the log from the modem:
SNR Margin: Down 19.5 Up 31.0 db
Line Attenuation: Down 16.5 Up 8.5 db
Data Rate: Down 8064 Up 384 kbps

The next step is to test another modem and see if the drop outs persist.

If they do, it is time to log a fault with Exetel.

Or, if it is not feasible for you to easily test a different modem, log a fault with Exetel anyway. The G.DMT on the modem when you have only 16.5dB attenuation (and are hitting the 8Mbps limit in sync speed) is another indication that perhaps something is amiss with your service or modem.
