Post by BAM » Wed Feb 10, 2010 10:41 pm

Could someone please explain these tracert results as to where the problem might be

Does this explanation of the Windows version of traceroute help? http://www.mediacollege.com/internet/tr ... route.html Some of your tests are having a slow trip to Exetel. Where are you?

There is a fuller explanation here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traceroute. Microsoft uses a slightly different form of the standard test.

I'm connected to the Maitland exchange (NSW) - couple of hours drive north of Sydney

So where is the issue - my end, me to the exchange, exchange to Exetel etc etc ?

You need more tests than you have given, but you are reaching your modem quickly enough. Between the modem and Exetel's routers was a bit slow for some results. That could be anything from router trouble to exchange congestion to Telstra ADSL1 backhaul problems. You need to tailor tests at different times and record the results. I'd use mtr, which has been ported down to Windows as Winmtr, though I am not sure if the port has all the options, including jitter.

You are connecting to an iinet address. Unfortunately the Australian internet wasn't designed with quick reflex games in mind, and you aren't going to get any priority over other traffic.
