what is the average sync speed on a naked ADSL2+ line?

Post by aleclangford » Thu Mar 18, 2010 12:51 pm

I recently moved in had a while without internet, but now that it's connected it's faster than I had before but not quite as quick as I'm sure it should be.
so before I sound Like I'm complaining, what sort of sync speeds should I be getting, and what sort of transfer speeds should I expect?

The speed is relative to the line length, so there is no exact average.

What sync speeds are you getting?

Try www.adsl2exchanges.com.au, do a "detailed search". This will return an estimate of your cable length. Ignore the speed estimates there as they are often grossly overstated.

Use that cable length estimate to check against http://www.exetel.com.au/pdf/downstream.pdf for an estiamte of sync speed.

For an estimate of throughput, take about 15% off your sync speed to allow for overheads.

Results can vary between services, so anything within about +10-15% or +-1 Mbps of the above estimates are about ballpark.

Set your modem to ADSL2+ mode and you might get faster speeds (it's currently set to G.DMT).

The line is testing OK, the length is 3285m, and it's in sync at 3808/768. This might get better with the higher spectrum enabled in your modem.
