Terrible speeds from download.microsoft.com

Post by JamesR » Sun Jun 06, 2010 5:36 pm

It has only come to my attention this afternoon that any download from download.microsoft.com is terribly slow, when usually they are quite fast (I'm assuming because they are fed from Akamai).

Is anyone else having these troubles?

My download at near max line speed was not encumbered by a filter. It's a safe site, so what happens if you disable malware filtering? (My traceroute gets ave 31 ms, by a different route)

I've just fired up the Ubuntu VM to see what the results from wget were... here's what it showed.

Mmm - resolved to 70.37.159.133 MS-GLOBAL-ONLINE-SERVICES So does wget for me now - 70.37.159.220 - still getting 800+ kB/s
Edit: can you get a better speed using multiple connections in axel?

...
...
...
Downloaded 37.0 megabytes in 1:01 seconds. (613.64 KB/s)
Obviously faster using 20 connections, but that still doesn't explain why it is slow - it's normally super fast using Akamai, but since I've downloaded last from MS, it seems to have really died somehow.

Edit: Something has definitely changed... it's downloading much faster now using Firefox on Windows...

I downloaded 235Mb from MS site on Monday in roughly 7 minutes (no stop watch), during off peak, agout 10am.

Used the Microsoft download manager.

Will try additional tomorrow with more accuracy.
