Speed and Offpeak times

Post by awtm » Mon Nov 01, 2010 12:36 pm

I've just changed my plan to 20GB peak & 180GB off-peak, from the 12/54 plan I'd been on for ages.
Only after changing did I notice that the off-peak times have now changed to 4-10am. For me it was
still 2-12 before I changed plans. My speed has never been that great, but now with the 6 hour
off-peak limit, I'm wondering if I can/should do something to change it as the way it is I'll be lucky if I
am able to use half of the 180GB off-peak allowance as last night I managed to download only
3GBs between 4-10.

On speedtest.net, several tests average out to around 1.25Mbps.
(tested at noon)
I live 2.5kms from my exchange "as the car drives".
I have one phone connected to a filter supplied by exetel and a
security system which has no filter attached.

Should I be expecting more from my ADSL2+ and are there any steps I can take
to improve my speed?

Many thanks for any help,
Awtm

Can you email residentialsupport@exetel.com.au with the status results? You appear as though a stability profile is present. Check you use multimode rather than G.DMT. You might also investigate the filtering of your alarm system when ADSL2 gets back up to speed.

Thanks for the reply Daz,

in the ADSL settings for my modem (NB6Plus4W)
the following are ticked (by default)

"Select the support of line modes:"
G.dmt
G.lite
T1.413
ADSL2
READSL2
ADSL2+

I can't find a "multimode" anywhere. Should I untick everything except ADSL2+?

Edit - tried that and lost my internet connection completely!!
I also tried a speed test with nothing but the modem plugged in and the result was the same.

Tick the 6 modes you list - the modem can sort out what to do then for whatever it finds - normally ADSL2+. Send off the email though, because someone should look at your service, it looks like an ADSL1 profile.

A 1.5Mbps profile was there, gone now!
That's also why it wouldn't work when you chose ADSL2+ only!

As to modes - anyone with an ADSL2+ or ADSL connection should only select:
G.dmt, ADSL2, and ADSL2+.
By default the modem selects all and chooses what it thinks is the best.

Thanks JasonM - that must be close to the fastest fix ever.

Just re-tested and got a speed of 5.55Mbps.
5 times faster, got to be happy about that.

However now it seems that for over 2 years I have been
paying for ADSL2+ and not getting it,
or having it limited to1.5Mbps,
which is not going to make anyone happy!!! :x

Thanks for the help though.
