Really slow tonight???

Post by my99 » Tue Mar 29, 2011 7:37 pm

I've recently changed over from iprimus. i've been with exetel for 5 days this is the worst speed i have seen http://www.speedtest.net/result/1225659789.png
normally get 16mb/s and even on peak time around i get 12mb/s. but now i'm getting a rock solid 1.3mb/s

Any ideas what going on?

Welcome to the forum my99. I hope someone can help.

Is the speedtest.net result improved if you select a nearer server to you (Sydney)?
And a group of related queries -
--Which exchange in the Hunter are you on?
--Whose backhaul, ie which type of ADSL2 plan? (I'm guessing Telstra from the up speed)
--Is there a relationship between slow speed and time of day that you have noticed?

The usual advice for these things is to perform a couple of tests that sometimes indicate what's going on. First, run the modem in isolation with every other thing unplugged from the phone line, and, second try to flood the line. The simplest way is to browser download 3 files from Microsoft's and Apple's download centres (Akamai servers at Exetel) simultaneously and add up the combined rate. If you have a multithread download manager use it instead. It's as well to do these two now, as if you have go on to Support with a line problem this information will usually be asked for.

Yes it is slow, im not able to stream a youtube video. Speed results from mirror.exetel.com.au are showing about 200KB/s which is not bad, but not good either.

My line is synced at about 8Mb, and its not a line issue as it only seems to occur around this time.

Hi CLoSeR,

I can see that you have attained 3280.3 kbps as of yesterday.

I will get one of our support engineers to contact you and to help you troubleshoot your issue.

Welcome to Exetel! Nothing new to me about the slowness between 5.30 pm and 9.30 pm EVERY DAY!!!. This has been happening to me for the last 2 years and the only reason I stay with Exetel is that, because I am retired, I can access the internet through the day. Also because I have been a customer for a long time, it is cheap. My house is approx 3 km from the Corrimal exchange, at the outer extremity one could say and from what I understand, that is why traffic is so slow during this peak period. It took over 5 minutes for this page to load up so that I could type out my frustrations ....... reminescent of dial-up. It is so slow that the speed test didn't even register and came up with the message "download test error". During the day the service is lightning fast but there are occasions that I need access in the evening ........... not good enough Exetel

Hi Gownie bod,

1. Can you please tel me the exact time frames that you experience slower speeds?
2. Please conduct a speed test through http://www.exetel.com.au/speed as I cannot see recent speed tests you have conducted using our speed test URL.

Let em know the results enabling me to have a look at what you are reporting here.

Theje

The worst time is in the evening after 5:30 pm. Weekends can be a problem too but at the moment it seems reasonably fast.

Is this the place to advise you of the current speed?

I'm starting to regret having changed the exetel!! The speeds fluctuate so much it ain't funny i was looking at getting foxtel for my 360 but that is even choppy

How is it that with iprimus i'd never get under 10mb/s at worst. still being the same Telstra network/same connection and exetel speeds are horrid. why?

(No other programs running at the time of testing)
945am http://www.exetel.com.au/speed/results. ... recorded=1

9.48am http://www.exetel.com.au/speed/results. ... recorded=1

btw its a fresh install of windows 7 + Eset smart sercuity 4 (NOD32) no viruses etc

will be using speedtest.net from now

mmm sounds familiar. I was also getting <3mb/s on speedtest.net. I'm just saying exetels speedtest is inaccurate.

Connection speed is still trash at times..

I've done simultaneous downloads to test the speed as suggested from

http://download.microsoft.com
http://www.nvidia.com
http://www.apple.com

but makes no difference

It is very difficult to do a speed test when the download speed is zero........ lights on nothing happening. After waiting for 15 mintues for the exetel speed test to get just 3 words ("conducting bandwidth tests") onto the screen at 6:15pm today, I gave up in disgust. Some 30 minutes later a retest showed 245.6 kbps-
(http://www.exetel.com.au/speed/results. ... recorded=1).
6:46 pm: http://www.exetel.com.au/speed/results. ... recorded=1
These results are typical of any night of the week after 5:30 pm as previously stated.

My99, I had a word to some Exetel staff concerning the possibility of Telstra Wholesale backhaul from the exchange being congested at peak times at your location. I don't have any test results, but it seems that a Telstra backhaul upgrade is scheduled for completion sometime in the months ahead, so that at a guess diagnoses your problem. http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au lists only Telstra at the exchange, so all ISPs would now be affected in peak times. This is becoming more frequent in expanding places on the edge of the cities.

Gownie Bod, Similar tale - Telstra at Corrimal was upgraded recently, and there is more work yet to be done. Optus is also in that exchange.
