ADSL 2+ Sync Speed & Connection Drop-outs

Post by aphasia » Sat Jun 18, 2011 9:27 am

Hi

Been having some difficulty with my ADSL connection over the last month or so.
My sync speed has dropped dramatically since i first connected with ADSL 2+ a few years ago.
Before the last 4 to 6 weeks i was able to sync at 15Mb's - 17Mb's, Now the best i can sync at is 6Mb's.
My current stats as reported by my Billion modem (7402VGP) is;

DownStream;
Speed - 6.24 Mbps
Output Pwr - 0 dBm
S/N Ratio - 7 dB
Attenuation - 29.5 dB

UpStream;
Speed - 820 Kbps
Output Pwr - 20.3 dBm
S/N Ratio - 11 dB
Attenuation - 29 dB

i'm also experiencing connection dropouts, some times during the day but mostly at night.

old speed test from 6/6/11
[`[*Test Results from <a href="http://www.ozspeedtest.com/bandwidth-te ... 580266">Oz Broadband Speed Test</a>*]`]

[(Mirror: [*Exetel*]
Data: [*3 MB*]
Test Time: [*13.69 secs*])]

[(Your line speed is [*1.79 Mbps*] (1790 kbps).
Your download speed is [*224 KB/s*] (0.22 MB/s). )]

test i ran this morning
[`[*Test Results from <a href="http://www.ozspeedtest.com/bandwidth-te ... 734337">Oz Broadband Speed Test</a>*]`]
[(----------------------------------
Test run on [*18/06/2011*] @ [*08:55 AM*])]

[(Mirror: [*Exetel*]
Data: [*3 MB*]
Test Time: [*5.67 secs*])]

[(Your line speed is [*4.32 Mbps*] (4322 kbps).
Your download speed is [*540 KB/s*] (0.53 MB/s). )]

i ran the test(s) with nothing else connected to the net (browsing, email, dl'ing etc). i'm using Billion's SNMP viewer to monitor the connection/traffic thru modem so there is no un authorised traffic via the modem.
i'm also using a different telephone cable (less than 2M) and the connection is isolated (no phone handsets, faxs etc connected).
I've powered down the modem several times and also left the modem switched off for 20mins to reset the connection at the DSLAM.
suggestions?
cheers.

Experiencing very poor speeds again tonight. Sync speed still the same @ 6Mbps.
Attempted many speed tests tonight (http://www.ozspeedtest.com), almost all failed.
==========================================
Times of attempted speed tests,
Test run on [*18/06/2011*] @ [*08:20 PM*])]

Test run on [*18/06/2011*] @ [*11:16 PM*])]
Test run on [*18/06/2011*] @ [*11:22 PM*])]
==========================================

at 11:30pm i reset the connection (powered modem off for 15mins), modem still isolated on cable less than 2M.

MODEM STATS;
DownStream;
Speed - 6.39 Mbps
Output Pwr - 0 dBm
S/N Ratio - 6 dB
Attenuation - 28.5 dB

UpStream;
Speed - 1000 Kbps
Output Pwr - 20.3 dBm
S/N Ratio - 7 dB
Attenuation - 22.5 dB

hi, thanks for looking in.
yeah whatever change you made, the connection is worse.
did a speed test this morning;

[`[*Test Results from <a href="http://www.ozspeedtest.com/bandwidth-

test/results/16757084">Oz Broadband Speed Test</a>*]`]
[(----------------------------------
Test run on [*20/06/2011*] @ [*01:32 AM*])]

[(Mirror: [*Exetel*]
Data: [*3 MB*]
Test Time: [*9.52 secs*])]

[(Your line speed is [*2.57 Mbps*] (2575 kbps).
Your download speed is [*322 KB/s*] (0.31 MB/s). )]

the i refreshed my modem stats;
======================
DownStream;
Speed - 3.83 Mbps
Output Pwr - 0 dBm
S/N Ratio - 14.5 dB
Attenuation - 28 dB

UpStream;
Speed - 630 Kbps
Output Pwr - 20.3 dBm
S/N Ratio - 16 dB
Attenuation - 22.5 dB
======================

the S/N may be a little better but my sync has dropped to half (presumably for stability)
just after the speed test at 1:32am, the connection dropped for 10 to 15 mins.
considering i'm not that far from the exchange and the recent line degradation, something at my local exchange or on the copper from the exchange could be the problem.

did another round of tests this morning..

[`[*Test Results from <a href="http://www.ozspeedtest.com/bandwidth-

test/results/16757966">Oz Broadband Speed Test</a>*]`]
[(----------------------------------
Test run on [*20/06/2011*] @ [*08:15 AM*])]

[(Mirror: [*Exetel*]
Data: [*3 MB*]
Test Time: [*10.42 secs*])]

[(Your line speed is [*2.35 Mbps*] (2350 kbps).
Your download speed is [*294 KB/s*] (0.29 MB/s). )]

thought i might reset my ADSL connection again (8:30am)
======================
DownStream;
Speed - 4.32 Mbps
Output Pwr - 0 dBm
S/N Ratio - 15 dB
Attenuation - 29 dB

UpStream;
Speed - 656 Kbps
Output Pwr - 20.3 dBm
S/N Ratio - 16 dB
Attenuation - 22.5 dB
======================

the stats are still below par tho a little better than my reading earlier this morning. sync speed for down & up stream are improved.
ran another speed test after modem reset tho little has changed

Have you tried testing using another modem/router?

I recently had a similar problem where my connection was gradually degrading and soon things ground to a near halt (my upload sync had inexplicably halved). After running around trying every test possible I managed to get hold of a friends modem and much to my relief and immense frustration I found the connection was perfect and my original sync speeds and stability were restored. In fact I realised that for months, even YEARS now my modem had been operating at a reduced capacity. I quickly went out and bought a new modem/router and have been enjoying a perfect connection since.

i don't have access to another ADSL modem. while it may be possible that the modem is at fault and i'll purchase another if necessary, i'm not convinced that is my problem due to my fluctuating sync & 'Signal to Noise Ratio' and 'Line Attenuation'. my drop-outs seem to coincide with general congestion times and poor line stats with issues with the copper or in the exchange.

Changing attenuation and noise margins suggests that a noise source may be on the line, or that the modem can't handle it. Drop outs occur when the modem can't convert the telephone line to digital network format. Congestion at busy times of day is going to lengthen ping times and slow the packet rate rather than drop the connection cold.

A spare quality wired modem can be got for less than $30, and is worth keeping on hand.

thanks for looking in Dazzled, the modem doesn't lose sync (adsl light remains lit) during drop-outs.
tho i'm not opposed to purchasing a 'backup' modem, i'd prefer to exhaust the steps that don't involve me dropping cash.
does exetel maintain a log of customers sync speed. that at least would be useful at pinning down the date where the connection degraded.
there has been some construction going on at the end of my street for the last 8 - 6 months (erecting 3 units on the corner block) and i wouldn't put it past the sparkys chucking a wrench when hooking up the utilities.
i think after tonight i'll be submitting a fault ticket as sync speeds that allow dl'ing at a little over 300KB's is pretty poor for ADSL2 where before i was able to dl between 1 to 1.5MB's

made some changes in the last hour.
went out an purchased another modem so as to remove this step from trouble shooting.

swapped out my billion 7402VGP with a billion 7700N.

did a speed test;

==================================================================
[`[*Test Results from <a href="http://www.ozspeedtest.com/bandwidth-

test/results/16778462">Oz Broadband Speed Test</a>*]`]
[(----------------------------------
Test run on [*21/06/2011*] @ [*05:05 PM*])]

[(Your line speed is [*3.29 Mbps*] (3291 kbps).
Your download speed is [*411 KB/s*] (0.4 MB/s). )]
==================================================================

then switch off the modem for 15mins to reset the DSLAM
the modem stats are displayed a little differently with the billion 7700N, assuming the stats are divisible by 10 to correspond with the earlier figures attained from my 7402VGP SNMP viewer

Downstream
SNR Margin (0.1 dB): 149 (14.9)
Attenuation (0.1 dB): 385 (38.5)
Output Power (0.1 dBm): 0
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 4308

Upstream
SNR Margin (0.1 dB): 170 (17.0)
Attenuation (0.1 dB): 257 (25.7)
Output Power (0.1 dBm): 104 (10.4)
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 524

Its obvious that you have been put on a lower speed profile as
your downstream SNR has increased from 6dB to 15 dB

Maybe you can tweak your connection speed, have a read here:-
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-re ... 81&p=2#r28

or get exetel to change your lines connection, which from reading the above posts
seems to be restricted to a certain profile.

I have made the necessary changes, so your service should attain a better sync rate. Please test the service and let me know if you experience with any further issues.

agreed, i was aware that exetel had dropped me down to a more 'stable' profile. i purchased a modem because i recognised the sound logic behind it. i also recognised that modems don't often fail. i'm not talking about modems with a history of issues, poorly manufactured (the billion 7402 doesn't fit in these categories) or miss-configured modems. it makes sense to have a 'back-up' modem.

still not there yet. i'd power off my modem for 15mins shortly and report back.

cheers.
