ADSL2+ migration to new Optus plan

Post by Kassantha » Thu Jul 21, 2011 6:48 am

Hi, I put in a request on 29th June to migrate from my existing naked ADSL2+ unlimited plan with Exetel to one of the new Optus ADSL2+/Phone plans with Exetel. My request was accepted, and my billing has been changed to the new plan, but no sign of a connected phone line, no correspondence indicating when my phone will be connected, my VOIP number (which I am porting) is still active, and I am having issues with dropouts on my existing ADSL2+ connection.

The dropouts are a huge issue (ADSL line has sync, but authentication keeps dropping) while I am still using VOIP as I live in an area that has limited mobile reception and have to go stand on my back deck in the freezing cold to talk to anyone. This limits my ability to lodge a ticket for the dropouts as I can't sit in front of my modem/pc to test anything while talking to a technician, and is the main reason I am leaving my unlimited plan to move to the Optus package.

More importantly though, can someone please tell me what is going on and when am I going to get the phone line I have been paying for for the last 3 weeks but haven't had access to?

Would you be able to PM me your service number :?: . so that i can look into what has happened :)

There seems to have been a delay in the process that is why it has taken so much time , however i have escalated this and we should have the VOIP number ported over within about 10 working days :) , i have also sent you a separate email regarding this.

Would you be able isolate the modem and see if you still experience dropouts ?

Hi Udara,

Thanks for your assistance.

As per my email, my modem is the only appliance running on my phone point here. We don't have a connected phone line, pay TV or an alarm and as such don't use a splitter on the modem. The modem itself runs directly off its own powerpoint (no powerboards/adaptors). I don't know how I can isolate it any further?

The connection seems to have been stable for the last two days, but I will let you know if the drop-outs start again.

:)

The first thing I did when I changed from naked adsl2+ to adsl2+ with phone service was to unplug my modem from the phone line and plug in a corded phone hand set and listened. If there was a fast busy tone I knew that I still had a naked service. A normal busy tone indicated a telephone service, so I needed the ADSL splitter connected. No sound, or crackling and popping noise means I had a faulty line and to pass it back to Exetel to arrange repairs.

Yes , the way things are connected should be fine till we get the PSTN going ,,any how Let me know how things turn out :)

Need2No is right , once the PSTN is activated if the ADSL connection is dropping out , connecting a standard corded handset and checking for line noise would be the best course of action. If there is line noise, its best you log a fault so that we may investigate further. :)

Well it's started again :( Today it's been up and down like a yoyo though it seems. Log pasted below. As far as I know there has been no change with my PSTN line being connected, so still just the modem running directly to the phone connection, no splitters, no other devices.

As udara has mentioned, could you connect a phone by itself to the wall socket, and test to see if there is any noticeable noise on the line when you pick up?

Ultimately when I had these similar issues, it was water found in the comms pit on the street, which required an escalation of a fault through Exetel.

Hmmmmmm...although the modem logs are saying that its going up and down ... i can see the connection alive and stable for well over 2 days from our Looking glass.

The last authentication attempt that hit our radius server was on Sunday Jul 24th at 07:48 and this was a successful attempt :? .

Do you by any chance have an alternate modem that you can try on the line :?:

I'll see if I can grab a modem from work and test it with that. I'll also have to hunt around for a corded handset...

So update time!

Nice sunny week in Melbourne last week, connection was stable and didn't drop once!

Rain starts in Melbourne over the weekend (especially heavy here on Sunday) and my net starts dropping out on Sunday.

Brand new Billion modem straight out of the box put on the line Monday night (after a day of no rain) with no drop outs, but it rains Monday night and Tuesday morning the connection drops out again with the new modem connected.

I'm seeing a pattern here...

Still no connected phone line either.

So where do I go from here?

From what you say it seems that rain/water is effecting your line. You need to log a service issue ticket and we will get our engineers to investigate this for you.

Ok ticket logged, and hopefully half my problem resolved.

Other half is the absence of a connected phone line requested nearly 6 weeks ago now that I have been billed for since 1 July but still don't have.
