often get slow speeds on the 28th of month

Post by casio7131 » Mon Jan 28, 2013 6:40 pm

My billing month resets on the 28th of the month, and it often seems that my download speeds slow down a lot on the 28th.

For example, this download will normally max out my connection at ~895 kBps, but I'm only getting ~350 kBps now (ranging from 250-500).

I've unplugged my modem for a few minutes and it hasn't made any difference and I'll try unplugging for 10-20 mins later on - and I'm pretty sure that'll fix it, but it gets a bit annoying to have to do that every month (call me lazy).

Does this happen to anybody else? Can this be fixed?

Yes it happens to me too, and the 28th is my first day of the new billing cycle.

I usually exceed my quota and have opted to be shaped until my quota is reset, but if anything it feels like my downloads go slower when the billing cycle restarts.

As shown I get around 700kbps, and only a couple of km from the exchange, ADSL2.

I certainly have never been able to fix it but I do feel a bit shafted being shaped for part of my new billing cycle.

Someone has suggested that in fact the 28th is the reset date for all members and that with the reset quotas people are going download crazy again - a possibility?

EXETEL - ANY CHANCE OF SOME HELP WITH THIS?
My speeds are ridiculously slow even for basic web browsing.
Thanks

Hi,

Normally once the usage meter has been reset your service will be automatically removed from the shaping pool. However you may have to power cycle your modem in order to start the new session.

Your service is currently not being shaped, so I have done a port reset to your connection.

Could you please restart your modem and re-test the speed. If you experience any further issues please feel free to drop an email to residentialsupport@exetel.com.au.

Awesome, thanks steve that must have been what the clicking was, it is now super fast again.
So in future, on the 28th I (and perhaps the OP) should just restart the modem and de-shape myself.
Easy :)

Yep, a simple restart to the modem would do the trick

Well I was not getting shaped (I didn't exceed my quota last month).

After a 10-15min modem reset, I get speed tests ranging between 310-613 kBps (see below). Once I've finished downloading, I will do a 30min reset and hope that it then gets fixed (I think it usually needs longer than 10min to fix it most months).

Still getting slow speeds after a ~20min modem reset - http://www.speedtest.net/result/2467858769.png

Can somebody fix/reset my connection so I can get proper speeds back, please?

Hi ,

I have done a port reset to your connection, therefore could you please restart the modem and re-test the speed.

These browser speed tests are sus. Shortly after casio7131 posted, I ran the same Oz speedtest at home, and got:
Your line speed is 3.43 Mbps (3434 kbps).
Your download speed is 429 KB/s (0.42 MB/s).

Now the speed meter that runs permanently at the foot of my screen says that's nonsense, so I downloaded a 3 MB file from the Exetel mirror. The wget downloader reported the average speed at 627 KB/s, with some bursts very much higher. I then started the latest Ubuntu torrent and rapidly passed that speed to sit at about 700 KB/s for the torrent.

well my exetel speed test seems fine now (~850 kBps, http://imgur.com/k7QJYj8), but not from others.

no matter if those other speed tests are suspect, but i know i'm still getting slow speeds seemingly everywhere else - my mp3 link is still slow, downloading firefox from aarnet.edu.au is still slow, 5-10 simultaneous from ul.to are still slow (slow = 350-500 kBps).

fortunately, i've got nothing else that needs a quick download tonight, so i'll check again tomorrow and i expect that everything will be fine (ie. i expect my next mp3 episode will max out my download link). if not, then i'll post again here tomorrow.
