My home internet is being used to download dozens of movies

Post by Avignale » Fri Jan 08, 2010 1:26 pm

Hello, My sister is using our internet service for downloading movies and television shows, I'll come back later with a full list of the shows, but can you please show me where to get her reported or something for her illegal activities. yeah and sending a warning email of copyright infringement would be great.
last month she used up our entire 90gb quota downloading stupid tv shows and movies.
so where do i report her

they don't care, a disconnection notice or something would be something to open their eyes.

any legal action would be against the account holder, not your sister, they should care

An btw my entire monthly quota was used up by this cow, thats 90gb.
I thought exetel took piracy extremely seriously and so my sister downloads non stop the entire month countless television shows and movies and nothing happens.

Your parents. If they don't care let her continue and the account holder will cop the potential consequences.

You may notice I've edited a few posts on this thread. The reason is that I think that this forum should constrain itself to the relevant issue and questions regarding copyright infringements and not concern itself with the animosity that you have to your sister and any other illicit activities of hers. So please, remain on-topic and please stop making any disparaging remarks about your sister (or your parents for that matter). This forum does not exist for the purpose of slanderous or libellous remarks.

As for copyright infringement, perhaps you need to contact AFACT (http://www.afact.org.au/) but one thing you need to be aware of is that generally, downloading of copyright material is only a civil offence, not a criminal one, so to be realistic you are probably not going to get any "legal proceedings" underway. To make cries of "I want my sister sued" simply exhibits little knowledge of the system.

In general you will find it more useful to try to curb her downloading in your own network. I would suggest putting wireless encryption on your router and not telling her the password. Something that punishes her by removing internet access completely will probably be more realistic and effective.

To this end, if you describe your computer and network setup (is she on her own laptop, is it a shared computer, how computer literate are you and how computer literate is she, what does she use to do her downloading - torrents, newsgroups, FTP, IRC, etc) then I'm sure this community can think of novel and practical ways that would bar her from downloading such copious amounts of material. This would then address both the concern of copyright infringement and the usage of your quota in a proactive way, and is much better than the alternatives of having your household receiving a civil fine or your account simply being disconnected completely

Stop being so logical for crying out loud :( I want to see this unfold into him getting his sister gaoled, and the parents kicking him out for causing it, and follow his life via internet cafe from the streets.

Stop fanning the Old Flames some one usually gets burned
Meanwhile for under $100 I am setting up one of these http://www.gargoyle-router.com/
Fully admin set daily, weekly, monthly quota, a good usable filter, to block unwanted sites. Admin set throttling. And working QoS.

Just a thought, but wouldn't it be the same place that you report the videogames that you download?

I have the same problem which I have under control with a good router and an old pc running a proxy server.

Firstly a good router is all you need really, such as a Billion 7404VGP to control wan access in many ways i.e. QOS, port filtering, P2P blocks etc

A nice way to make the system tight is to get an old pc with a simple proxy server such as http://www.handcraftedsoftware.org/inde ... y&cat_id=2 (it an odly but works very well)

With a proxy server you can control and monitor web activity i.e block torrent sites, block porn sites etc

Plus its a bit geeky and kinda fun for some!

Fr33, You can do better than that. Modem/routers are single board computers, most of them running a flavour of Linux, such as MontaVista. Any Linux box can be configured as a gateway, but it is not elementary stuff, so a couple of groups have preconfigured one for you, at no cost. Look up http://www.clearfoundation.com/Software/overview.html and http://www.untangle.com/ These are routers in their own right to put at the front of your LAN.

Of the two, Clear is aimed mainly at system administrators, while untangle is positioned mostly for ordinary Windows users and the underlying Linux is well hidden. Hardware requirements are minimal - just an old PC with two ethernet ports. Check out the demo videos at http://www.untangle.com/Demos-Screenshots Each user can be individually controlled or virus checked.

If you hunt around there are a few others, and the instructions for configuring desktop and server Linux, eg Ubuntu, are online.
