Optus and new PSTN connections

Post by PatrickT » Wed May 23, 2012 12:47 pm

Some weeks ago I requested a new PSTN connection and ADSL service in suburban Canberra via the FU-65 plan. It looks like a great plan and I'm sure it will be excellent value for money if I ever get a physical connection to enable me to use the ADSL and PSTN accounts that have now been activated.

I am amused and bemused by the fact that I have now been told on three occasions now that "work on your service number has been completed" yet my dead phone socket remains as dead as it always has been.

I accept that Exetel only acts on what it is advised by its suppliers, but how exactly does Optus think a new PSTN connection can be made without a live line?

Helpdesk has sent this back to Optus for investigation, but I wondered if this is a common occurence.

A Telstra technician came today and installed a line in so the phone line is now active and the telephone works.

ADSL is very slow for an ADSL2 connection though. I have included speedtest results below with only the router plugged in and no background downloads etc.

Test run on 25/05/2012 @ 02:42 PM
Mirror: Exetel
Data: 3 MB
Test Time: 21.32 secs

Your line speed is 1.15 Mbps (1149 kbps).
Your download speed is 144 KB/s (0.14 MB/s).

Test run on 25/05/2012 @ 03:33 PM
Mirror: Exetel
Data: 3 MB
Test Time: 23.84 secs

Your line speed is 1.03 Mbps (1028 kbps).
Your download speed is 128 KB/s (0.13 MB/s).

I now have a new modem but sadly the service is still very slow, never reaching 1.5mbps. I have also never seen it line sync above 1.5mbps on an ADSL2 service.

Current modem stats are:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1383 kbps 687 kbps
Line Attenuation 53.0 db 30.4 db
Noise Margin 7.9 db 9.1 db

As expected with that line sync I get the following actual results:

Oz Broadband Speed Test
Broadband Speed Test Results

Test run on 28/06/2012 @ 09:30 PM

Mirror: Exetel
Data: 3 MB
Test Time: 22.98 secs

Your line speed is 1.07 Mbps (1066 kbps).
Your download speed is 133 KB/s (0.13 MB/s).
