Hi Yabbie,

The verification is only valid for the length of the session.
Should the session end you will need to re-verify your login.
Also, you're not registering an IP address.

Cheers Will.

Well that's no good. It takes over an hour for the SMS to arrive!?!?!

I get them straight away.

If anyone else is receiving them slowly (1 hour) please let me know.

Cheers Will

My biggest issue is the fact they make me PAY for the text that tells me my PIN. The system works well otherwise, thank you exetel for the quick response.

Then you probably shouldn't own a computer.

That would really have to be one the most stupid comments I've ever read :? (but I will assume instead that it was made in jest)

I live my life surrounded by computers with nary a mobile in sight - and I don't feel disadvantaged one little bit :D

Too true :? and I have not hesitated to make my views known to those in charge  (even though I obviously appreciate the need for the restriction to Exetel IP addresses).

Good to see that others are not on tap 24/7
But I would still like to access SMS from any computer I desire - I travel a lot.

Has there been any more progress on this? I like to use the service from work, and it's a pain in the ass constantly having to request a pin via an SMS I have to pay for.

At this stage, these restrictions will remain in place.

Cheers Will.

I guess I'll have to tunnel a port into the home ADSL connection, and then back out to the exetel web server, though probably easier to just proxy via tunnel to the home squid server.

Seems to me that maybe Exetel could do something with some kind of one time password challenge / response system like OPIE, which would send an SMS to the phone the first time, with some part of the authentication that needs to be used subsequently. It would still be awkward, however it would at least be subsequently free, and thus more palatable when you only want to send a text or two. There are J2ME apps to do the OTP processing on the phone.

I have a question tho. If I hack user facilities, then I should be able to change my registered phone number, which means I should be able to get around the previously implemented restrictions anyway. Probably to a stolen phone, I guess, so that doesn't help much, except for catching stupid thieves.

There is an alternative limited web-based facility to send SMS via the Web ... in fact, there are two services, which are variations on a theme.

They were developed for use with Exetel's HSPA mobile service (so do not rely on Javascript) and can be found at http://ipsms.tellingbone.info and http://sms.tellingbone.info.

They do not send bulk email, but do maintain an address book and a list of template messages.

For more details, see the thread at http://forum.exetel.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=308&t=29054.

All the best

Mark
