Blocked Page

Post by LordS » Fri Jan 02, 2009 8:17 am

I'm not entirely sure how I would say this so I've just pasted what I wrote in IRC.

[13:34] <LordS> just a friendly reminder
[13:34] <LordS> maybe jason could put the idea in the staffs head
[13:34] <LordS> I dont see putting in a phone number
[13:34] <LordS> on the block page
[13:34] <LordS> being a legally binding contract
[13:34] <LordS> to accept charges
[13:35] <LordS> it should require phone number/username/password
[13:35] <LordS> to prevent those who aren't the authorities or the accounts
[13:35] <LordS> from accepting it
[13:35] <LordS> therefore it not being a legal contract
[13:35] <LordS> ie my brother accepted it on the 30th
[13:35] <LordS> when I was at work
[13:35] <LordS> for peak
[13:35] <LordS> which I never gave him permission to do

I just think a phone number is not ample information to unlock the account.

There's no need to be rude. I suggest you send your suggestion to residentialsupport@exetel.com.au.

I read it as incredulity, rather than rudeness, that anyone noticed and bothered to respond, even if it wasn't someone tagged "official". I normally find this forum responsive, so I don't think a response is unusual.

Maybe there should be a link that leads though the user facilities directly to an unblock yes/no page?

That way you have to authenticate to the user facilities, and then you are forwarded directly to an unblock page within user facilities to verify unblock.

Further I concur with Gidget's suggestion re your suggestion. You might want to add the above, or reference the thread if we get more ideas thrown in.

It was a sarcastic comment, which I consider rude and unnecessary. It is possible to overlook a thread.

In any event, I have already referred his suggestion to the appropriate section in Exetel myself.

Best thing to do would be to remove the blocked page and excess charges on the shaped plans and make shaping actually work but I guess that is easier said than done.

It would be an ideal solution to all problems, but I guess it isn't on the agenda.

That would just revive the original issue - users seeing shaped service as a means of getting an 'unlimited' service to 'leech' all month.. The purpose of shaped services is to avoid exceeding usage excessively (ie.. avoiding a large bill) or avoiding having no service for the remainder of the month - and 2GB in each period is a fair amount of usage after reaching the already large usage limits.

Thing is that Exetel's shaping is different to many other ISP's shaping techniques. Exetel shape the speed on the backend of their system while other ISP's shape the users line speed to the exchange.
Incorrect. The shaping can be applied at different points.

The exchange doesn't allow exetel to change shaping settings, instead, shaping is done at the routers where the customer PPP session terminates - thereby slowing access to ALL parts of the network (including VoIP, P2P cache, etc).
To my understanding, the current topology of the Exetel network allows VoIP to function correctly, and restricts speeds to 64kbps to the links that leave the Exetel network. This may have changed however.
