Independent usage checking?

Post by daveb » Sun Apr 05, 2015 1:26 pm

Is there a way to verify the metering/usage information supplied by Exetel?
Frankly I'm a little skeptical that it reflects my efforts to restrict the majority of my downloading to the off-peak period.

The simplest way is your modem/router. Routers measure the throughput in both directions. Look up the status pages and you should find the usage on your LAN, and on the WAN which Exetel measures. Unfortunately routers don't give times - simply the current total traffic since the device was last reset.

It is possible that packets are being sent to you which the router is rejecting, but are still measured traffic on your line. The logs will give rejection data. These quantities are usually quite small.
