Encrypted outbound faxes

Post by pulpy2000 » Wed Jun 16, 2010 11:31 am

I'm looking into solutions for my workplace who want to send faxes securely.

Currently they have an in-house fax server, but it is not particularly robust or supported, and it needs extensive customisation to send faxes for a new scenario. It would be much easier and more flexible, IMO, to be able to have people send an email with a PDF/HTML attachment and have it faxed.

As everyone is concerned that "email is insecure", although faxes are fine, they are worried about sending unencrypted data to a third party server for faxing. Is it possible to use S/MIME to encrypt emails to be sent to Exetel?

If that is possible, once the fax gets to the server for sending and is decrypted, does Exetel provide any controls around retention of data on the fax server and/or confidentiality undertakings?

Finally, some email to fax services provide the necessary configuration to allow faxing via email directly from Microsoft Office products, as described from a user perspective at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/ ... 81033.aspx. Can/does Exetel provide configuration to allow this kind of integration with Office?

Email messages and attachments can be encrypted without effort, eg for Thunderbird/Enigmail: http://enigmail.mozdev.org/home/index.php, https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/71/. It's quite straightforward on any system that runs GPG. Email may be transmitted in ASCII, but this sort of scrambler makes the content indecipherable to eavesdroppers. VoIP's voice content can be scambled too.

Thanks Dazzled!

Do you know if Exetel's Email-to-Fax server has a public key for encryption that can be downloaded and set up within Outlook? Will it correctly interpret and decrypt S/MIME messages, or does it assume no encryption?

Hi Guys,

I'm currently confirming the possibility of this.

Cheers Will
