I have another issue, It looks as though the webspace requires you to have the DNS
assigned through Exetel in order for it to be viewed based on the setup email I was given.
No it doesn't. :)
If http://www.mydomainname.com.au does not work in your FTP client, please use
vh1.web.exetel.com.au until such time that the DNS entry for
http://www.mydomainname.com.au has updated.
Now, it indicates I can use FTP to upload the files, but how can I view the website without
transferring my whole DNS system to Exetel ??? Is there an alternate URL I can use to
access the webserver.
If you've not setup http://www.blah to point at our web servers yet you can ftp to vh1.web.exetel.com.au instead. Once you get it setup use www.blah so that if we need to change the location of the server your website is hosted on you don't need to change anything.

In any case you don't need to transfer hosting of dns to us. You will, evenetually, need to change the www record of your domain to our web server so that your website can be seen.

Thanks for your reply, The problem is that http://www.blah points to our existing website. You indicated that you can use an alternate address for FTP but not to view the new website (vh1.web.exetel.com.au). i.e. How can I view the new website without needing to change http://www.blah from our existing website first ????

Hi,

You have a couple of options:

1) ask for an alias to be setup - for instance - www-new.yourdomain.com - which points to the IP of our web server.

2) fool a computer into thinking that www.your-domain.com actually resolves to the exetel server, regardless of DNS. This usually done by modifying what's called the hosts file - you would basically need to add an entry that pointed www.your-domain.com to 220.233.0.22. Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file for information about where the hosts file lives on different operating systems.

Ok not strictly true, but you must have the webname you chose on application as a valid FQDN and
then have your DNS server adjusted to suit before you can access the new webspace via http.

Because this is not fully conveyed in the signup process I made the mistake of using our www address
as per the suggestion in the application only to find that since I already have an existing website
pointing to www I cannot access our new webspace via http on Exetel because of this.

So what I have found out which may be important for future customers signing up is:

1. Exetel virtual web hosts are name based not IP based.
2. The web name you supply on application must be a valid name to be assigned in a DNS server.
3. You cannot change the web name after application in Member Facilities. (Maybe you can by phoning/emailing Exetel Support)
4. The appropriate DNS entries must be setup before you can access your web hosting space via http (web browser).
5. If you have an existing website then select a name that is different than the one that you use to access that existing site.

There were no instructions of how you would setup the DNS entries needed in the initial web hosting setup confirmation email. But the helpful staff at Exetel did send one today on what entries are needed in the DNS server. Basically its a CNAME to vh1.web.exetel.com.au not to an IP number as suggested in an earlier message in this thread.

e.g. if you signed up to web hosting with the name newsite.mydomain.com.au then you will need to put the following entry into your existing DNS server for the domain mydomain.com.au

newsite IN CNAME vh1.web.exetel.com.au.

Then you can access your new web space via http using the URL http://newsite.mydomain.com.au

I would like to praise the staff at Exetel as they are prompt and helpful with the email support they have been providing me today. Its refreshing to deal with people at an ISP that actually know what you are talking about and how their systems work :)

James has said you won't be charged - even if you were inadvertently charged a quick email to billing would sort it out. Life is too short to get stressed over such things :D

Thanks for that. Only reason I was getting stressed was that this is a business account, and my boss would not be too impressed to see up to $300 of annual hosting off his credit card for a transaction that I HAD TO AUTHORIZE in order to get the free included hosting. A quick email would not sort out the fact it would come out of my pay. Especially when I didn't seem to be getting straight answers.
I would like to confirm that the company I work for WAS CHARGED for the so called free included webhosting. My company's credit card was deducted $200 annual hosting fee.

I am not impressed, Exetel had better sort out an improved way of setting up the "free" included services that come with the business ADSL plans. I am contacting Exetel now to try and get the charge reversed which is wasting my time. They don't pay me by the hour for these kinds of stuffups.

That's odd!? I set my Exetel web hosting up and closed it without ever being asked for credit card details. :?
The views I present here are not necessarily those from my brain.
Exetel's support number outside Sydney: 1300 788 141 NOTE: I do not work for Exetel.
