FTP Problems with FileZilla

Post by 98067313 » Tue Nov 04, 2008 9:09 am

I set up my webspace through the exetel site last night and now i'm trying to FTP with no luck. Details are:

FTP Login Name: fw_yorston
FTP Status: ENABLED
FTP Address: home.exetel.com.au
Web Address URL: http://home.exetel.com.au/yorston

filezilla gives this:
Status: Selected port usually in use by a different protocol.
Status: Resolving address of home.exetel.com.au
Status: Connecting to 220.233.0.59:80...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Could not connect to server

IF i try go through IE it says:
the folder ftp://home.exetel.com.au is read only becasue the proxy server is not set up to allow full access. etc...

i'm no expert at this but i managed to get it all working on the old server, not sure what i'm doing wrong any help would be much appreciated

This is your problem. You appear to have FileZilla configured to connect to port 80 on that server, which is most commonly used for http (web). The correct port to use for FTP is port 21 - give that a try.

Hi,

There may be any number of reasons why IE isn't working. Not being a MS user myself, I can't really comment on why / why not IE doesn't work with a protocol as simple as FTP. What I can say is that IE is a terrible FTP client (especially if you need to upload) and it's probably a good thing that you have to use something else :)
