Accessing files on my web space

Post by JillB » Fri Feb 06, 2009 7:50 pm

I am new to web site design. I have just configured my webspace on Exetel server, and I am using Coffeecup DirectFTP to load files to the site. At the moment, I can see the file by putting in the website address , and the file name. eg http://home.exetel.com.au/myUsername/File_name.pdf. So far , so good!

Can anyone please advise how I should set up this site, so as to let users view all my 100 photo files and download them if necessary? I would like users to be able to see the file names and select from them

All help and suggestions very much appreciated

regards,
Jill

do you want them to be able to see the file names only or actually see a preview of the files? What software are you using to write your site?

The Exetel Server doesn't allow directory listing, so you would need to create a page named index.html that listed and linked to each file.

thanks for these quick responses. I appreciate now that Exetel does not have Directory Listing, which is what I was really after. But "jok11n" has alerted me to a better way. I like the idea of being able to preview the files. How do I go about that, please? I will be using Dreamweaver for my web page development

Jill

You can achieve something a bit like what you want without coding. Create a subdirectory in your space, and put a link to it in the root page's index.html.
In the new directory, create a file called .htaccess (note the full stop and lower case). In the file put the line:
Options +Indexes

You will now find that when you navigate to the subdirectory you will be presented with a file listing. Put your photo files there, and they will be downloadable by clicking on the file name.

This is not a proper gallery though. The simplest method I would suggest for this is to find the php source for a gallery, and link to it in a subdirectory. Follow the instructions with the php code for naming and locating the files to be displayed.

One of our fellow Exetel customers has a clever gallery script here http://home.exetel.com.au/phelum/images.htm
(see it in use at http://phelum.net/images/)

There are several others at http://gscripts.net/free-php-scripts/Ph ... eries.html

In the long run the best application to prepare your source code (both html and css) is a simple text editor. The code will invariably be simpler, easier to maintain, and less likely to have syntax errors.

personally I use Gallery for my photos http://gallery.menalto.com/ but I have almost 8000 photos on my site so maybe a bit overkill, maybe something like this is suitable http://www.zenphoto.org/ there are heaps of others, depends what you want to do I guess, there are demos of those here http://gallery.menalto.com/gallery and here http://www.zenphoto.org/zenphoto/demo-gallery/ which might give you some ideas for your own site
