Can I point a domain name to my web space?

Suppose I have a web space http://home.exetel.com.au/mywebspace and a registered domain name www.mydomainname.com.au. Can www.mydomainname.com.au be pointed to http://home.exetel.com.au/mywebspace or do I have to order a hosted service for that?

that can generally be done by wherever you purchase the domain name from, alternatively if the domain registrar doesn't support cloaking you can use someone like Zone Edit www.zoneedit.com and set your your options there

The exetel shared hosting server doesn't support name based hosting, so you won't be able to set that up using DNS.
URL redirection services may work.

I would guess cloaking would work as some of the providers I have seen suggest this is a suitable purpose, to point at ISP provider webspace etc

I was planning to buy the domain name from Exetel. So in that case I should be ok?

Exetel doesn't supply URL Redirection / URL cloaking on Domain names, so you wouldn't be able to redirect the domain name to the shared hosting server URL.

I was referring to domain names bought elsewhere, sorry for any confusion

So this means that if I register a domain name with Exetel I can't use it with my web space? In that case I would have to order website hosting too or would domain hosting suffice?

Thanks,
Martin

Hi Martin,

Cloaking / redirection of the type you are describing is a service provided by whoever hosts your DNS. So it is conceivable you could still register your domain name with Exetel and get DNS hosting with someone who provides this, as Exetel currently do not.

The alternative is to get a web-hosting package - which is generally a better option as the service allows you a bit more freedom with what you can do than the 'free' server.

Regards,
Daniel C

Thanks. The web-hosting package seems to be the right option.
