Where do I find the size of my web space?

Post by lbennett » Tue Aug 11, 2009 2:24 pm

Where or how do I find how much of my 200MB web space I have used?
If needed can I buy more or do I have to go to a full web hosting package?

The simplest way to get the space used would be to add up the file sizes as shown in your ftp client. The next step is to get the server to tell you. Place a small html file with a sutable php script embedded in it on the site, and go directly to it in your browser to receive a report. Somebody posted one in the forum yonks ago if you can find it. I'll add a PS if I remember.

Adding up all the file sizes in a folders and sub-folders would be a time consuming task so I look forward to the file if you can find it.
I searched but couldn't.

Thanks. That is perfect. Now I can easily keep track of usage.
It's a wonder Exetel don't add it to the account statistics.
Are you listening Exetel?

I think on the whole it's better if users control and report on their spaces themselves.

If you want to get involved with php scripting, you can get the configuration of the Exetel server by including this little web page in your web space:

Code: Select all

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">
<html lang="en">
<head>
  <title>PHP Info</title>
  <meta http-equiv='Content-Type' content='text/html; charset=UTF-8'>
</head>
<body>
  <h1>PHP Info Page</h1>
  <?php
    phpInfo();
  ?>
</body>
</html>

I use Winscp for managing webspace. If you right click a folder > properties > calculate you get the size of a folder, subfolders and contents . The php script linked above is handy if you don't want to go into your FTP program though.
See ya Jim

Jim, It's even easier if you use one of the Linuxes - no special software is needed at all - just mount the ftp URL as if it were local and then use the normal file facilities. For Gnome desktop users, Places->Connect to Server will mount, with the usual desktop icon (let the OS remember the password); Baobab (Disk Usage GUI) operates normally. In fact, Baobab will mount by itself and report the usage even if the ftp site is not previously mounted.

The little PHP script mentioned earlier in this thread is universally available.
